In a stunning turn of events, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele and his New Ideas party have clinched a supermajority in Congress, granting him unprecedented power to govern unchecked. Electoral authorities confirmed this victory after a contentious vote tallying process, stirring concerns among watchdogs and the feeble opposition over alleged irregularities.

Bukele's landslide re-election triumph on February 4th had already solidified his hold on the presidency. However, the pivotal question lingered: would his party secure the same dominance in legislative polls? With 54 out of 60 congressional seats under New Ideas' sway, and three more secured by allied parties, Bukele's aspirations for total control have materialised.

The President's premature declaration of victory, boasting of record-breaking support, foreshadowed this outcome. With his self-styled moniker as the "world's coolest dictator," Bukele now commands not just the executive but also legislative supremacy, consolidating authority across all branches of government.

Renowned for his aggressive stance against gangs, Bukele enjoys immense popularity for drastically reducing violence. Yet, accusations of anti-democratic manoeuvres taint his tenure, notably electoral reforms favouring his party and clashes with dissenting voices in Congress.

The reduced number of legislative seats, spearheaded by Bukele's allies, tilted the electoral playing field further in his favour. His dependency on Congress for sustaining anti-gang measures underscores the significance of this victory.

However, concerns loom regarding potential constitutional amendments to prolong Bukele's rule, despite legal objections. The newfound dominance in Congress amplifies his capability to shape policy, and judiciary appointments, and potentially amend constitutional provisions barring consecutive terms.

While critics decry procedural irregularities and a flawed vote-counting process, doubts persist over their substantial impact on Bukele's overwhelming support base. Calls for a fresh election echo among the opposition, yet evidence of widespread irregularities remains inconclusive.

As the dust settles on El Salvador's electoral turmoil, Bukele stands triumphant, poised to wield unprecedented authority, albeit amidst lingering scrutiny and scepticism.
