A New Year's celebration turned tragic in Switzerland’s Alps after a deadly bar fire ripped through a packed venue.
The blaze broke out shortly after midnight at Le Constellation bar in the resort town of Crans-Montana.
Authorities say about 40 people lost their lives, and at least 115 others were injured, many critically.
What began as a night of celebration quickly became one of Switzerland’s worst peacetime tragedies.

Fire Engulfs Packed Swiss Alpine Bar

The Swiss Alpine bar fire erupted less than two hours into the new year.
Police said the bar was crowded with local residents and international tourists.
The exact number of people inside remains unknown.
Investigators will examine whether the venue exceeded its maximum capacity.

Crans-Montana, known globally for skiing and golf, was filled with holiday visitors.
Within minutes, smoke and flames overwhelmed the wooden interior of the bar.
Authorities declared five days of national mourning following the disaster.

Authorities Rule Out Terror Angle

Valais Canton Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud confirmed no signs of an attack.
She said investigators have not identified a cause yet.
Fire experts are still unable to access the damaged structure safely.
“No suspect has been arrested,” Pilloud said during a press briefing.

An investigation has been launched to determine how the Swiss Alpine bar fire started.
Officials stressed it is a fact-finding probe, not a criminal case at this stage.

Survivors Recall Scenes of Chaos

Eyewitnesses described panic as flames spread rapidly across the ceiling.
Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old survivor from Paris, recalled suffocating smoke.
He lost friends during the escape and remains deeply shaken.

Clavier said staff appeared with Champagne bottles fitted with sparklers moments before the fire.
He initially hid under a table before fleeing upstairs.
Breaking a Plexiglas window helped him escape the burning bar.

“I lost everything, but I survived,” he said.

Witness Accounts Raise Safety Questions

Several witnesses told French broadcaster BFMTV about troubling moments before the blaze.
One account described a bartender lifting a colleague holding a lit candle.
Moments later, flames reportedly spread across the wooden ceiling.

Another witness described a deadly crowd surge.
People rushed up narrow stairs from a basement nightclub.
Escape routes were limited, worsening the chaos.

Others smashed windows to flee as smoke filled the room.
Parents rushed to the scene, fearing their children were trapped inside.

Italian Nationals Among Victims and Missing

Italian authorities confirmed at least 13 injured were Italian citizens.
Six Italians remain unaccounted for following the Swiss Alpine bar fire.
Italy’s foreign minister planned a visit due to the scale of involvement.

One missing person, Giovanni Tamburi, prompted a public appeal from his mother.
She pleaded for information as hospitals remained overwhelmed.

Three critically injured Italians were transferred from Switzerland to Milan for treatment.

Hospitals Overwhelmed by Casualties

The regional hospital in Sion quickly reached full capacity.
Intensive care units and operating theaters were stretched within hours.
Local officials urged residents to avoid accidents during the recovery period.

Medical resources remain under severe strain across Valais Canton.

Crans-Montana: A Global Alpine Destination

The resort sits high in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by peaks near 3,000 meters.
It regularly hosts World Cup ski races and international sporting events.
The town is also set to feature prominently before the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Tourism authorities warned visitors to remain cautious in the coming days.

National Grief and Calls for Unity

Swiss President Guy Parmelin addressed the nation on his first day in office.
He praised emergency responders facing scenes of extreme distress.

“This is a moment for unity and dignity,” Parmelin said.
He emphasized Switzerland’s strength lies in collective resilience.

The Swiss Alpine bar fire has left a nation mourning.
As investigations continue, families await answers amid profound grief.
