Ryan Hurst will play Kratos in the upcoming “God of War” live-action series.
Amazon Prime Video has officially cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos in its long-awaited live-action adaptation of God of War, marking a major milestone for the high-profile project.
The casting brings Hurst full circle with the franchise. He previously voiced the thunder god Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, but now takes on the far more iconic role of Kratos—the Spartan warrior turned god whose violent past and emotional restraint define the series.
From Spartan Warrior to Reluctant Father
Kratos is described as a man forged by war and tragedy. Born in Sparta and raised in a ruthless martial culture, he rose to power after making a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek god of war—a bargain that cost him his soul.
The live-action series will adapt the storyline from the franchise’s two most recent games, shifting focus from vengeance to fatherhood. Kratos is tasked with raising his young son Atreus following the death of his wife, Faye.
According to the series logline, the journey to scatter Faye’s ashes becomes both a physical quest and an emotional reckoning, as Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus challenges his father to become a better human.
A Familiar Face for Prestige Television Fans
Hurst is best known for his acclaimed portrayal of Opie Winston in FX’s Sons of Anarchy and his chilling turn as Beta in AMC’s The Walking Dead. His television résumé also includes Bates Motel, Outsiders, and The Abandons.
On the film side, Hurst has appeared in major productions such as Saving Private Ryan, Remember the Titans, and We Were Soldiers, and is set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey.
A Long Road to the Screen
Amazon first greenlit the God of War series in 2022, but the project has undergone significant creative shifts. Original showrunner Rafe Judkins exited in late 2024, with veteran producer Ronald D. Moore stepping in as showrunner, writer, and executive producer under his Tall Ship Productions banner.
Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes, while Cory Barlog—creative director of the game franchise—serves as an executive producer, ensuring continuity between the game and its screen adaptation.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions.
A High-Stakes Adaptation
With Ryan Hurst now confirmed as Kratos, Amazon’s God of War series appears to be taking a serious, character-driven approach to one of gaming’s most beloved and complex figures. Fans will be watching closely to see whether the adaptation can honor the emotional depth and mythic scale that made the franchise a global phenomenon.
