U.S. President Donald Trump introduced the TrumpRx website last September, allowing people to buy certain prescription drugs directly from manufacturers. CNN

The Trump administration launched a new website on Thursday called TrumpRx, marking a major step in its push to lower prescription drug prices. The platform now allows people to view and access discounted medicines directly from drug companies, without using insurance.

The site connects patients who pay cash with drugmakers willing to sell certain medications at reduced prices. Some of the drugs available include popular weight-loss treatments that many insurance plans do not cover.

At a White House event to mark the launch, Donald Trump praised the program’s potential impact. “You’re going to see numbers that you’re not going to believe,” Trump said of the prices listed on the site.

How TrumpRx works

TrumpRx acts as a central listing of discounted medicines. Users can search for a drug or browse what is available. Depending on the medication, they can either download a coupon to use at a pharmacy or follow a link to buy the drug directly from the manufacturer’s website.

The site advises people with insurance to compare prices carefully. In some cases, insurance co-payments may still cost less than the cash prices offered through TrumpRx.

So far, 43 drugs appear on the site, and officials say more will follow. At least 16 drug companies have agreed to take part, though the full list of medicines and prices remains limited.

Prices and discounts vary

The discounts listed range from 33 per cent to as much as 93 per cent, based on standard list prices. Many drugs show prices about half of their listed cost. However, list prices often differ from what people usually pay through insurance plans.

Some announced drugs have not yet appeared on the website. Others already sell at similar prices through existing pharmacy discount programs, which may limit how much money patients actually save.

Experts say the savings may help certain groups, especially people without insurance or those whose plans do not cover specific medications.

Who may benefit most

Specialists believe uninsured patients stand to gain the most from TrumpRx. People with high insurance deductibles may also find value, but they will need to compare options carefully.

“TrumpRx might support access and affordability for a very small number of people,” said Rena Conti, an associate professor at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.

Some experts warn that paying cash could cause problems if insurance companies refuse to count those payments toward deductibles. That could leave patients paying hundreds of dollars each month without reducing their yearly insurance costs.

Growing interest in direct drug sales

Selling medicine directly to consumers did not begin with TrumpRx. Other companies already offer similar options, especially for weight-loss drugs. These medications attract strong demand because many insurance plans do not cover them.

Dave Ricks, chief executive of Eli Lilly, highlighted the growth of direct sales, saying, “The number of people engaging with our US direct-to-patient platform, LillyDirect, increased to over 1 million patients in 2025.”

Experts say this strong interest may not extend to all medications. “I don’t think people are as excited to pay for blood thinners out of pocket,” said Evan Seigerman, a senior pharmaceutical analyst.

Unanswered questions remain

While TrumpRx aims to ease pressure from high drug prices, some experts warn of possible side effects. Insurers could decide to stop covering certain drugs if patients can buy them directly. Others question whether the lowest prices promised truly exist worldwide.

For now, TrumpRx adds another option for patients navigating rising health costs, but its long-term impact remains uncertain.
