In the world of chess, a new sensation is emerging, shattering records and turning heads. Meet Ashwath Kaushik, an eight-year-old prodigy from Singapore who is rewriting the rules of the game. In a remarkable feat of skill and determination, Ashwath has etched his name into the annals of chess history by becoming the youngest player ever to defeat a chess grandmaster in a classical tournament match.

It was a momentous Sunday at the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open in Switzerland when Ashwath faced off against the seasoned Polish grandmaster, Jacek Stopa, aged 37. In a display of strategic brilliance beyond his years, Ashwath triumphed over his opponent, securing a victory that will be remembered for generations to come.

This extraordinary achievement comes just weeks after another young talent, Leonid Ivanovic, set the bar by becoming the first player under nine years old to defeat a grandmaster in a classical game. Yet, Ashwath's accomplishment is even more astonishing, as he managed to surpass Ivanovic's record by a margin of five months.

Reflecting on his historic win, Ashwath expressed his exhilaration and pride, recounting the twists and turns of the game with infectious enthusiasm. "It felt really exciting and amazing, and I felt proud of my game and how I played, especially since I was worse at one point but managed to come back from that," he shared in an interview with Chess.com.

Hailing from India, Ashwath has been making waves in the chess world since his early years, clinching victories in youth tournaments across the globe. His crowning achievement came in 2022 when he was crowned the World Under-8 Rapid champion, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication.

Despite his young age, Ashwath's skills on the chessboard have garnered attention and admiration from veterans of the game. In the recent tournament in Switzerland, he demonstrated his prowess once again, finishing 12th among competitors with far more experience.

In an interview, Ashwath's father, Kaushik Sriram, shared his astonishment at his son's rapid ascent in the world of chess. With neither parent having a background in the game, Ashwath's natural talent has been a revelation. "It’s surreal as there isn’t really any sports tradition in our families. Every day is a new discovery, and we sometimes stumble in search of the right pathway for him," Sriram remarked.

As Ashwath's journey in the world of chess continues, enthusiasts and spectators alike eagerly await his next move, wondering what new heights this young prodigy will reach.
