Giorgio Mammoliti, a longtime Toronto city councillor and former Ontario MPP, has died at the age of 64. His family confirmed that he passed away unexpectedly at home.

His son, Christopher Mammoliti, shared that his father was “surrounded by his family when he passed.” He later added that the death was sudden.

“We are obviously devastated and are left with a tremendous void. Dad loved his family, his community and our beautiful city,” Mammoliti’s son wrote.

“We respectfully ask for privacy at this time but will be sure to share the viewing information as it becomes available.”

Nearly Two Decades at City Hall

Mammoliti represented Ward 7 York West, now known as Humber River–Black Creek, from 2000 to 2018. During those 18 years, he became one of the most recognizable and outspoken voices on Toronto City Council.

Before entering municipal politics, Mammoliti served as a Member of Provincial Parliament for the New Democratic Party from 1990 to 1995. That role helped raise his profile and paved the way for his later career at City Hall.

At council, he often took strong and sometimes controversial positions. In 2018, he called for the return of carding and school police officers. At another time, he referred to Parkdale as a “pedophile district,” remarks that drew widespread criticism.

Despite controversy, he remained deeply engaged in council debates. He also served on former Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee and held positions with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and The Hockey Hall of Fame Committee.

Political Campaigns and Later Years

Mammoliti lost his council seat in the 2018 municipal election to Anthony Perruzza. He attempted to return to office in 2023 but did not win.

Over the years, he also ran for mayor several times — in 2010, 2022 and 2023 — but did not secure victory. In recent years, he lived in Wasaga Beach.

Tributes From Across the Political Spectrum

As news of his passing spread, tributes came in from current and former political figures.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow offered “sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to all those mourning his loss today.”

“Giorgio Mammoliti served the public for many years, both as an MPP and as a city councillor,” Chow wrote.

Anthony Perruzza said he was “saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic passing of Georgio Mammoliti.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with Georgio and his family during this time of loss. Rest in peace my friend,” he wrote.

Deputy Mayor Mike Colle described Mammoliti as someone who fought strongly for his beliefs. In a statement, he said, “Giorgio was a political street fighter who took on all comers and never feared controversy when he believed in a cause, especially if he felt his constituents wanted or needed something done.”

Former Mayor John Tory also reflected on their time working together. “While he was never far from controversy he always stood up for the people he represented and for better, or sometimes worse, said exactly what was on his mind,” Tory wrote.

“All that aside, those same conversations we had and my many outside encounters with Giorgio allowed me to see what a big heart he had and how much he wanted to help hold up his community. He was a truly larger than life personality whose life was cut way too short.”

Maxime Bernier said, “Giorgio had a long and distinguished career in public service — first as an NDP Member of Provincial Parliament, and later as a long-serving Toronto city councillor. What defined him was not party ideology, but his dedication to the people he represented.”

Flags Lowered in His Honour

The City of Toronto announced that flags at City Hall, Metro Hall and all civic centres will fly at half-mast in his memory. Officials will release further details about funeral arrangements in the coming days.

Mammoliti leaves behind a long record in public life and a reputation as a bold and outspoken figure in Toronto politics.
