Study reveals 1 in 4 Americans unsure of tax refunds. Economic concerns and lack of knowledge add to stress. Mobile finance apps gain popularity for managing finances. (AP)

A recent study has revealed that a significant portion of Americans are uncertain about whether they will receive a tax refund this year. The research, based on a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, indicates that 25% of respondents are unsure about their tax refund status, marking an increase from 20% last year. Conversely, 43% of participants anticipate receiving a tax refund in 2024, a slight uptick from 40% in the previous year.

The average amount expected as a tax refund among respondents who anticipate one is $2,023.50 for the current year, down from an average of $2,338.40 last year. The survey, conducted by OnePoll for Cricket Wireless, also uncovered shifting trends in how individuals plan to utilize their tax refunds.

Notably, two-thirds of Americans stated that if they were to receive a tax refund in 2024, they would use it in a more responsible manner compared to previous years. Among those anticipating a refund, 60% intend to rely on the extra income, with 36% planning to save it, a notable increase from 26% last year.

The study also highlighted that individuals undergoing significant life changes, such as contributing to retirement plans or starting new jobs, are likely to allocate their tax refunds to support these transitions. However, a quarter of Americans admitted feeling stressed leading up to the tax deadline, largely due to uncertainty about what to expect.

For many respondents, this uncertainty is compounded by a lack of knowledge about tax-related terms and their financial situation, particularly in light of recent life changes. Additionally, economic concerns play a role, with only a third of Americans expressing optimism about the economy in 2024.

To address these challenges, a majority of respondents have adopted proactive financial strategies, including increased budgeting and reduced spending. Mobile finance apps have also emerged as popular tools for managing finances, with a significant uptick in usage compared to the previous year. Moreover, a growing number of individuals are leveraging smartphone technology to file their taxes, indicating a shift towards more convenient financial management practices.

Tony Mokry, Chief Marketing Officer at Cricket Wireless, emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to navigate financial uncertainties effectively. He encouraged consumers to seek value where possible, particularly in recurring expenses like phone plans. Mokry also underscored the convenience and accessibility offered by mobile finance apps, noting their role in simplifying money management and helping individuals achieve their financial goals.
