In Toronto, Summer McIntosh, the 17-year-old Canadian swimming sensation, clinched the top spot in the women's 100-meter freestyle event on Thursday at the Canadian Swimming Open.

Hailing from Toronto, McIntosh, who is anticipated to be one of Canada's leading contenders at the upcoming Paris Olympics, showcased her prowess by clocking in at 53.90 seconds at the Pan Am Sports Centre.

Following closely behind, Maggie Mac Neil from London, Ontario secured second place with a time of 54.01, while Mary-Sophie Harvey from Trois-Rivières, Quebec claimed the third spot with 54.27 seconds.

Meanwhile, Penny Oleksiak, Toronto's own and Canada's most decorated Olympian, finished in fourth place, completing the race in 54.43 seconds.

McIntosh's remarkable performance in the 100-meter freestyle came hot on the heels of her impressive display in the 200-meter freestyle event the previous day, where she clocked the fastest time of the year worldwide, finishing at 1:54.21.

The Canadian Swimming Open is set to continue until Saturday, offering further opportunities for swimmers to showcase their skills. Looking ahead, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic trials are scheduled to take place from May 13th to 19th in Toronto, serving as a crucial platform for athletes aiming to secure their spots in the prestigious international competitions.
