Rudy Gobert won a historic fourth DPOY award (AP)

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert clinched the 2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award on Tuesday, marking his fourth win, a feat that matches a league record.

The 31-year-old Frenchman had previously secured the honor in 2018, 2019, and 2021 during his tenure with the Utah Jazz. This season, he played a pivotal role for the Timberwolves, contributing significantly to the team's status as the NBA's top-ranked defensive club.

Gobert's achievement equals the all-time record held by Detroit's Ben Wallace (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and Dikembe Mutombo (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001), who played for Denver, Atlanta, and Philadelphia.

Standing at 7 feet 1 inch (2.16 meters), Gobert missed the Timberwolves' playoff game against Denver on Monday to be with his girlfriend, Julia Bonilla, who gave birth to their son, Romeo, earlier that day. Expressing his joy over the new addition to their family, Gobert conveyed his gratitude for the blessings received.

Gobert garnered 72 first-place votes from a media panel, securing a comfortable lead. Victor Wembanyama, a 20-year-old talent from the San Antonio Spurs and also of French descent, secured second place with 19 first-place votes, while Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat clinched third place with three first-place votes.

Throughout the season, Gobert showcased impressive statistics, averaging 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocked shots, and 1.3 assists per game for the Timberwolves. His impact extended beyond individual statistics, as he played a significant role in instilling a defensive culture within the team, according to Timberwolves coach Chris Finch.

Acknowledging Gobert's influence, Finch praised his leadership and credited him with shaping the team's defensive identity. Gobert reciprocated the praise, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving success on the defensive end. He expressed gratitude to his teammates for their support and belief in his abilities, underscoring the collective effort required to foster a winning culture in Minnesota.

Despite his individual accolades, Gobert emphasized the significance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving defensive excellence. He recognized the contributions of his teammates and underscored the collective effort required to establish a winning culture within the Timberwolves organization.

In conclusion, Rudy Gobert's fourth NBA Defensive Player of the Year award solidifies his status as one of the premier defensive players in league history. His leadership, tenacity, and commitment to excellence have been instrumental in shaping the defensive identity of the Minnesota Timberwolves and inspiring his teammates to strive for greatness.
