A bombing at a popular café in Somalia's capital has left at least five people dead.

A tragic explosion outside a busy cafe in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least five people, according to police reports. The bombing occurred while many patrons were inside watching the European soccer final between Spain and England, highlighting the shocking nature of the attack.

Maj. Abdifitah Aden Hassa, a spokesperson for the Somali police, shared that a car packed with explosives detonated outside the cafe. In addition to the fatalities, around 20 others sustained injuries in this devastating incident.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene. Ismail Adan, who was present during the explosion, explained that some people were hurt while trying to climb over the cafe's perimeter wall to escape, while others were injured in the ensuing stampede. Most of the victims were reportedly on the street at the time of the blast, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the attack.

Images circulated online showed flames erupting outside the cafe, reflecting the violence of the moment. The attack has raised concerns about security in a city that, despite its troubled history, has seen a period of relative calm in recent months.

While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for this bombing, attacks by the Islamic militant group al-Shabab have been common in Mogadishu and other regions of Somalia. Al-Shabab is known for opposing the federal government, which relies on foreign military support to maintain control. Despite a generally peaceful atmosphere in Mogadishu recently, this attack marks a significant return to violence.

Just a day before the cafe bombing, Mogadishu experienced a deadly attempted jailbreak at a local prison, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people. This incident involved convicted prisoners linked to al-Shabab who engaged in a gunfight with prison guards, further illustrating the ongoing instability in the region.

Somalia's government is actively engaged in a campaign against al-Shabab, which the U.S. has identified as one of the most dangerous groups affiliated with al-Qaida. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared a "total war" on these extremists, who continue to control substantial areas in central and southern Somalia. The government has been the target of numerous U.S. airstrikes aimed at degrading the group's operational capabilities.

As Somalia navigates these turbulent times, the cafe bombing serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats faced by its citizens. The government’s offensive against extremism is ongoing, but attacks like this highlight the challenges that remain in ensuring safety and stability for the people of Somalia.

In the wake of the explosion, the community is left to mourn the loss of life and grapple with the trauma of violence that continues to affect everyday life. Security measures are likely to be reevaluated as authorities seek to prevent further tragedies in the future.
