Actress Cameron Diaz suggests separate bedrooms for better sleep, sparking discussion on relationship dynamics and rest quality. (Glamour)

Cameron Diaz recently shared her perspective on relationships, suggesting that having separate bedrooms could normalize better sleep without disrupting love. In a podcast interview, the 51-year-old actress, married to Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, proposed the idea of individual sleeping spaces while maintaining a shared family home.

Expressing her view, Diaz emphasized the concept of individual rooms for herself and her partner, with a central bedroom for intimacy. This notion of separate sleeping arrangements has garnered attention, reflecting a growing trend known as "sleep divorce" - opting to sleep separately to avoid disruptions that impact sleep quality.

A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine revealed that over a third of Americans occasionally or regularly sleep apart from their partners. Sleep experts recognize potential benefits to this practice. Dr. Erin Flynn-Evans noted how a partner's sleep disorder can affect the other's rest, especially in cases like insomnia, where both partners may wake simultaneously. Additionally, differing sleep preferences, such as one being a night owl while the other an early bird, can negatively impact both partners' sleep patterns.

Dr. Daniel Shade, a sleep specialist, highlighted common issues that can disturb sleep, including snoring, varying schedules, disturbances due to light or temperature preferences, and even differing habits like watching TV at night. However, he highlighted the positive aspects of sharing a bed, citing the release of oxytocin and other bonding hormones associated with intimacy and closeness.

While acknowledging potential sleep disturbances, Shade emphasized that sharing a bed can foster emotional closeness and physiological benefits, provided there are no significant sleep issues. Ultimately, the decision to sleep together or separately hinges on understanding individual needs and preferences within a relationship.
