Al Green was escorted out as Donald Trump spoke to Congress in Washington. BBC

A heated moment unfolded in Congress when Representative Al Green was thrown out for interrupting President Donald Trump’s speech. The Texas Democrat stood up and shouted, "Mr. President, you don't have a mandate!" just minutes into Trump’s address, referring to planned Medicaid cuts.

His outburst was met with loud chants of "U-S-A!" from Republican lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson quickly ordered his removal. Green has long been a vocal critic of Trump and had previously called for his impeachment during Trump’s first term.

After leaving the chamber, Green spoke to reporters, standing by his actions. He insisted Trump had no mandate to cut Medicaid and announced he was preparing articles for impeachment. "This is the richest country in the world, yet many people lack proper health care," he said. "Now, we’re cutting Medicaid, which helps the poor. We must do better."

Green wasn’t the only Democrat making a statement during the speech. Many Democratic women wore pink dresses to protest Trump’s policies, arguing that rising costs affect women the most. Others wore yellow and blue ties, showing support for Ukraine.

Trump had just announced he was pausing all military aid to Ukraine. This decision came shortly after his tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Throughout the speech, most Democrats stayed seated and silent. Some, however, held up placards that read "false" in response to Trump’s claims. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers cheered enthusiastically and often broke into chants of "U-S-A!"
