Defense attorneys for Alec Baldwin are fiercely contesting an upcoming trial that could decide his fate over the tragic shooting on the set of "Rust." The incident, which led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, has sparked a legal battle centered on whether Baldwin should face involuntary manslaughter charges.

Baldwin's legal team is challenging the integrity of critical evidence, particularly the firearm involved in the shooting. They argue that the gun, crucial to determining what transpired during the fatal rehearsal, was mishandled during FBI forensic testing. According to Baldwin's attorneys, the firearm was damaged beyond repair before experts could fully examine it for any potential modifications that could clear the actor of wrongdoing.

The upcoming court proceedings, set to commence next month, will pivot on these arguments. New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer will preside over hearings that could ultimately shape the outcome of Baldwin's trial. Prosecutors assert that the evidence suggests the gun functioned normally and that its discharge was triggered by Baldwin himself, contradicting his claim that he never pulled the trigger.

Central to the defense's strategy is an undisclosed expert analysis challenging the origin of certain marks on the gun, suggesting there's uncertainty about its exact mechanical state during the incident. Baldwin maintains his innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges that could lead to a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison if convicted.

In a separate legal development, the judge recently denied prosecutors' attempt to compel testimony from armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was convicted earlier this year in connection with the shooting. Her testimony could have been crucial, given her role in handling the firearm and the circumstances surrounding its use on set.

Despite these legal maneuvers, Baldwin's defense team faces an uphill battle, as they continue to argue that he lacked awareness of any potential risks associated with the weapon. The prosecution, on the other hand, has shifted its stance following new analyses of the gun, leading to a grand jury indictment against Baldwin after initially dropping charges.

As the courtroom drama unfolds, the case has drawn widespread attention, reflecting broader concerns about safety and responsibility in the film industry. For Baldwin, the stakes are high as he prepares to defend himself against allegations that have already reshaped his career and public perception.
