It’s official: the "Princess Diaries" franchise is expanding once again.
Anne Hathaway shared a playful video on her Instagram this Friday, where she is seen relaxing outdoors before raising one finger. The clip then transitions to a younger Hathaway in the iconic 2001 film, "The Princess Diaries," where she famously exclaims, "A princess?! Shut up!"
The Oscar winner then held up two fingers, followed by a clip of her co-star Julie Andrews saying "Shut up" in the 2004 sequel, "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement."
With a grin, Hathaway flashed three fingers and said "Shut up" herself. After laughing and blowing a kiss to the camera, she posted a screenshot revealing that "The Princess Diaries 3" is in development at Disney, with Adele Lim, director of "Joyride," attached to the project.
Hathaway captioned the post with "Miracles happen," and added, "Back to Genovia," referencing the fictional kingdom from the series. She ended the message with, "The fairy tale continues," followed by a heart emoji.
"The Princess Diaries" follows the story of Mia Thermopolis, played by Hathaway, a regular teenager who discovers she’s next in line to a royal throne. Julie Andrews starred as Queen Clarice Renaldi, Mia’s estranged grandmother and ruler of Genovia.
The announcement of a third movie, two decades after the last installment, is exciting news for fans of the franchise. But it’s not the only highly anticipated sequel Hathaway is set to star in.
According to IMDb, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is in pre-production, with Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci all expected to return.
The plot for this sequel reportedly focuses on Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, as she faces competition from her former assistant Emily Charlton (Blunt) while the print media industry declines and Miranda nears retirement.
