Anshul Kamboj became India's 318th Test cricketer.

India’s latest Test debutant, Anshul Kamboj, has scripted a stirring tale of grit, patience, and passion. From a humble village in Karnal to the grand cricketing stage of Manchester, Kamboj’s journey is a testament to resilience and raw talent.

A Dream Years in the Making

Anshul’s cricketing journey began in Fazilpur, a small village in Haryana’s Karnal district. His debut for India came during the crucial fourth Test against England in Manchester, part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. He replaced the injured Akash Deep, stepping in at a pivotal moment for the national side.

Steady Rise Through the Ranks

Before this milestone, Kamboj had impressed in domestic circuits, representing Haryana. He stood out in the unofficial Tests against the England Lions, taking five wickets and outperforming fellow seamers Mukesh Kumar and Harshit Rana.

His call-up to the Indian squad came after the Lord’s Test, following a string of injuries to bowlers like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, and Akash Deep. Arriving in the UK just days before the match, Kamboj immediately impressed in the nets, catching the eye of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

From Setbacks to Success

Anshul’s rise wasn’t without hurdles. He was initially overlooked as an injury replacement, with Harshit Rana getting the nod. Rather than sulk, Kamboj returned home and trained rigorously. He brought back Dukes balls from the UK and honed his bowling in Karnal’s nets, focusing on both batting and bowling.

“He worked extremely hard after the India A tour,” said his coach Satish Rana. “We were confident that he’d get his chance. He just needed to stay patient and keep putting in the effort.”

Fighting Personal Battles

Off the field, life wasn’t easy. Kamboj’s father, Udham Singh, has battled epilepsy for over a decade. The stress at home and career uncertainties could have derailed him. Add to that the disappointment of missing the 2020 U-19 World Cup due to injury—a time when he felt “demoralised” and uncertain about continuing with cricket.

But he didn’t give up. Instead, he trained harder, focused deeper, and found strength in adversity.

A Record-Breaking Feat

Anshul truly burst into the limelight last year during the Ranji Trophy. He became only the third bowler in history to take all 10 wickets in an innings. His 10/49 against Kerala, including nine maidens in 30.1 overs, made headlines across the cricketing world.

IPL and Legendary Praise

Kamboj’s performances earned him a spot with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League earlier this year. Under the watchful eyes of MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming, he impressed with his powerplay spells.

Even seasoned stars like Ravichandran Ashwin took notice. Ashwin compared Kamboj’s discipline and focus to that of legends Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah.

Coach’s Blessings and Last-Minute Advice

Just hours before his debut, Kamboj made an emotional call to his coach. “He called to ask for final tips,” shared Rana. “I told him, ‘Give 100 percent and stay calm.’ He said he’s ready.”

Poised for a Memorable Debut

With India needing a win in Manchester to claim the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Kamboj’s debut couldn’t have come at a better time. His journey—from setbacks to a possible match-winning role—adds inspiration to the team’s ambitions.

“He’s worked hard for this moment,” his coach said proudly. “Now it’s time to show the world what Anshul Kamboj can do.”

From Karnal to cricket’s biggest stage, Anshul Kamboj has arrived—and he’s just getting started.
