In a shocking incident on Tuesday morning, an armed individual launched an attack at Edmonton City Hall, firing shots and throwing a Molotov cocktail, according to Chief Dale McFee of the Edmonton Police Service. The police chief addressed the media in a news conference later that day, providing details about the alarming situation.

The incident unfolded at approximately 10:25 a.m. when reports of shots fired at city hall reached the Edmonton Police Service. Swift response from officers led to the apprehension of an adult male suspect within minutes. Chief McFee assured the public that the situation had concluded, emphasizing that there was no indication of accomplices and no ongoing threat to public safety.

During the attack, audio of the gunshots resonated through the live feed of the Emergency Advisory Committee meeting. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi and councillors Jo-Anne Wright and Aaron Paquette were present at the meeting, which was promptly adjourned for safety reasons.

The assailant gained access to city hall through the parkade, navigating through the building while discharging multiple shots and causing damage to glass structures. Notably, the suspect, reportedly dressed in a security uniform, was armed with a long gun and several Molotov cocktails, resulting in a small fire outside an elevator.

Remarkably, an unarmed Commissionaire detained the suspect before the arrival of law enforcement, displaying commendable bravery. Chief McFee expressed gratitude for the swift and effective response, emphasizing the fortunate absence of injuries or loss of life.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and Chief McFee could not confirm whether the suspect was known to the police. The identity of the assailant has not been disclosed, with further updates, including potential charges, expected in the future.

Reflecting on the incident, councillor Jo-Anne Wright shared her experience of being in an emergency management meeting when the shots were heard. The attendees were quickly informed of the danger, and security measures were implemented, leading to a safe evacuation of the premises.

Mayor Sohi, in a video statement, expressed shock at the events and reassured the public that the city hall, a historically open and welcoming space, would continue to be so. Support through the employee family assistance program was highlighted for city staff affected by the incident.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged the quick response of the police in a social media statement, thanking them for their actions.

As a result of the incident, city hall remains closed, and scheduled meetings for the following day have been postponed. City manager Andre Corbould affirmed that the building would reopen once deemed safe.

Summary: An armed individual targets Edmonton City Hall, firing shots and throwing Molotov cocktails. Swift police response leads to the suspect's apprehension, and no injuries are reported. The motive remains unclear. City hall closed; meetings postponed.
