Arthur Jones, the former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman and Super Bowl champion, has died at the age of 39. His alma mater, Syracuse University, confirmed his passing Friday morning. Neither Syracuse nor the Ravens revealed the cause of death in their statements.

Jones, a standout player for both Syracuse and the NFL, was remembered not only for his athletic achievements but also for his uplifting personality and generosity.

A Presence That Brightened Every Room

“Arthur's presence was a gift to everyone he encountered,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said. “His big, bright smile, infectious energy, and eternal positivity continuously lifted those around him.”

Ravens coach John Harbaugh echoed these sentiments. “Art was a remarkable person, a dedicated teammate, and a relentless worker. His love for life and radiant smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He had a genuine gift for connecting with people and bringing joy to the locker room and Baltimore community.”

From Syracuse to the NFL

Jones made his mark at Syracuse University, setting a school record for interior defensive linemen with 38½ tackles for loss. He earned first-team All-Big East honors in each of his final two seasons.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Jones quickly became a key part of the team’s defensive line, especially during the 2012-13 seasons, when he recorded 8½ of his career 10 sacks.

Super Bowl XLVII Heroics

Jones’ most memorable professional moment came in Super Bowl XLVII. The Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers, with Jones sacking quarterback Colin Kaepernick just before the infamous power outage at the Superdome. He also recovered a crucial fumble in the game, helping secure Baltimore’s championship victory.

A Career Beyond Baltimore

After four seasons with the Ravens, Jones played two years with the Indianapolis Colts and concluded his NFL career with the Washington Football Team in 2017.

His impact on the field was matched by his off-field presence, inspiring teammates and fans alike. “Art was a source of light for our team,” Harbaugh said, “and his influence extended far beyond football.”

Part of a Legendary Family

Arthur was the older brother of former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and NFL star Chandler Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots. The Jones family has left a remarkable legacy in both professional football and mixed martial arts.

Remembering Arthur’s Legacy

Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack praised Jones for his contributions beyond his playing career. “Arthur Jones was a tremendous player and an even better person. We were fortunate that he continued to support our football program after his NFL days. He impacted countless student-athletes with his smile and uplifting messages.”

Arthur Jones’ career and life left an indelible mark on the NFL, Syracuse University, and the broader sports community. Fans and teammates alike will remember his athleticism, sportsmanship, and enduring positive spirit.
