Shock, grief, and disbelief echoed through the Austrian city of Graz as thousands gathered for a candlelight vigil. The vigil followed a tragic school shooting that left 10 people dead, including the 21-year-old gunman who ended his own life shortly after the rampage.
Silence Falls Over Graz
The emotional gathering took place in the heart of the city. Families, students, and strangers came together to honour the lives lost. Most stood in silence, holding candles, some weeping, others simply frozen in shock. The mood was heavy, the air filled with both sorrow and solidarity.
The attack occurred at the Dreierschützengasse secondary school, a place now scarred by the country’s deadliest shooting in recent memory.
A Lone Gunman and a Trail of Tragedy
Police identified the attacker as a former student of the school. He acted alone, using two legally owned firearms. He ended the rampage by taking his own life in a school bathroom.
Authorities later discovered a farewell letter at his home. Addressed to his parents, the note reportedly revealed no motive behind the deadly act.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed that nine others had died in the shooting. Twelve more were seriously injured. The victims included seven women and three men. Among them was a 17-year-old French exchange student, as confirmed by his grieving father.
A City United in Grief
The candlelight vigil saw the city square filled with flickering flames, bowed heads, and quiet tears. Many attendees were young—students who could have easily been victims themselves.
“This is an example of solidarity,” said local resident Felix Platzer. “You grieve together. And together, it is easier to cope.”
As Austria begins to heal, the government has declared three days of national mourning. A minute of silence was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday across the country. Flags at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, where the president’s office is located, were lowered to half-staff.
Questions With No Answers
Investigators continue to search for a motive, but so far, the gunman’s reasons remain a mystery. What is known is that he had not completed his studies at the school and that the weapons used were registered in his name.
Officials are urging the public to avoid speculation. For now, the focus remains on supporting survivors, comforting families, and helping a shaken city come to terms with the loss.
Austria Reflects on a Dark Day
As Graz reels from this horrific act, many are left asking how such a tragedy could unfold in a place meant to nurture young minds. While answers are scarce, one thing is clear: Austria has been deeply wounded. But in the shared grief of its people, there lies a strength that no gunman can destroy.
