A massive Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on Monday disrupted internet use worldwide, affecting social media, gaming, streaming, financial platforms, and more. By Monday evening, Amazon confirmed that services had returned to normal. The incident highlighted society’s growing dependence on a small number of tech giants for internet infrastructure.

The outage began early Monday morning, around 3:11 a.m. Eastern time. AWS reported “increased error rates and latencies” affecting multiple services in its US-EAST-1 region. Engineers immediately began working to restore functionality, describing the recovery as “slow and bumpy” — a process experts say is normal for complex cloud systems.

Amazon Points to Domain Name Issues

Amazon attributed the outage to problems with its domain name system (DNS), which translates web addresses into IP addresses. Without DNS, websites and apps cannot load on connected devices.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks online service disruptions, recorded over 11 million user reports affecting more than 2,500 companies. Popular services such as Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Robinhood, and McDonald’s faced outages, alongside streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+.

Even Amazon’s own services were impacted. Users reported problems with Ring doorbells, Alexa-enabled devices, Kindle downloads, and access to Amazon’s website. Many students and educators were also affected when the outage disrupted Canvas, a widely used learning management system.

Schools and Students Struggle

Damien P. Williams, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, described the impact: “I currently can’t grade online assignments, and students cannot access their materials.” Canvas is used by around half of North American college students, including all Ivy League schools.

At the University of California, Riverside, online instruction was limited as students could not submit assignments or take quizzes. Ohio State University informed 70,000 students that course materials might be temporarily unavailable. By 7:10 p.m. Eastern, access was restored.

The Toronto Blue Jays also faced disruptions as Ticketmaster’s system experienced outages, delaying ticket management. By 4:30 p.m. Eastern, the team confirmed that services were returning to normal.

Gradual Recovery Across Services

AWS began recovery roughly three hours after the outage started, but full restoration was not achieved until 6 p.m. Eastern, according to the company’s health website. Sixty-four internal AWS services were affected in total.

Cybersecurity expert Mike Chapple compared the situation to a power outage: “While a city’s power comes back online, neighborhoods may see intermittent glitches as crews finish repairs.”

Industry analyst Luke Kehoe emphasized the scale of the outage, calling it “a wake-up call” for businesses and policymakers about AWS’s foundational role in the internet ecosystem.

Global Ripple Effects

The outage also affected financial, gaming, and communications platforms worldwide. Canadian users reported issues with Wealthsimple, while AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood cited AWS as the cause. Messaging platform Signal and workplace tool Slack experienced interruptions.

Games like Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans were down, and financial apps such as Venmo and Chime were also impacted. Ride-sharing app Lyft faced outages, while UK companies including Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, BT, and the HMRC government site reported problems.

Reliance on a Few Tech Giants

Experts note that a handful of companies provide most of the global internet infrastructure. Patrick Burgess, a cybersecurity professional, said: “The world now runs on the cloud. When an issue occurs, its effects ripple across countless services.”

Fortunately, Burgess confirmed the outage was not caused by a cyberattack. “This looks like a technology problem that Amazon is equipped to fix,” he said, adding that AWS, Google, and Microsoft have well-established processes for quickly resolving such events.

Lessons from the AWS Outage

The incident underlines how modern life depends heavily on cloud computing. Even temporary failures can disrupt education, finance, entertainment, and communication. While frustrating, the outage was resolved within hours, demonstrating both the resilience and fragility of the internet’s backbone.
