The Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia has fined Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd. $590,000 for shortcomings in the construction of its pipeline across the province.
According to a statement from the office, the company received 10 penalties for failing to comply with the environmental assessment certificate's requirements.
These fines follow concerns raised by enforcement officers in April and May 2023 about inadequate erosion and sediment control along the northern B.C. pipeline route.
The office notes that these penalties mark an escalation in enforcement, as the company has repeatedly failed to meet the necessary standards.
Coastal GasLink had already been fined almost $800,000 for four previous violations related to erosion and sediment control, and an additional $6,000 for providing false or misleading information.
The office says inspections along the 670-kilometre pipeline, which is now complete, were prioritized due to ongoing issues. This led to 59 warnings and 13 stop-work orders.
