A 28-year-old man from Surrey, British Columbia, has been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing near the White Rock pier, according to authorities. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced the arrest on Monday in relation to the death of 26-year-old Kulwinder Singh Sohi.
Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing but provided the update on the arrest due to public safety concerns.
Last week, witnesses reported seeing Sohi involved in a physical altercation with a suspect before pursuing them along the White Rock Promenade. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Sohi succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
This incident marked the second stabbing near White Rock's pier within a 48-hour period, with the descriptions of the suspects in both cases closely resembling each other. While Sohi tragically lost his life, the victim in the second case survived the attack.
IHIT is urging individuals who were present near the White Rock Promenade, east of the pier, on April 23 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. to come forward with any information. Additionally, motorists with dash cameras who traveled along Marine Drive during that timeframe are encouraged to reach out to investigators.
Notably, IHIT's statement regarding the arrest did not reference the earlier stabbing incident. Police had previously cautioned against assuming a direct link between the two attacks but stressed the importance of gathering additional video footage and witness testimonies to aid in identifying the perpetrator(s) involved in both cases.
