British Columbia has committed up to $300 million in new capital funding to assist TransLink, the transit provider for Metro Vancouver, in expanding its bus fleet. This investment aims to alleviate overcrowding and reduce wait times across the region, according to Transportation Minister Rob Fleming.

The province's statement outlines that the funds will be utilized for the procurement of buses to enhance future services. TransLink plans to allocate the remaining balance from the $479 million provided by the province last year towards immediate improvements. These immediate enhancements will involve increasing service frequency, extending operating hours for over 60 routes, and introducing late-evening HandyDART services.

Brad West, the chair of the mayors' council on regional transportation, emphasized the necessity for a transit system in Metro Vancouver that can accommodate the area's burgeoning population. He stressed the importance of addressing short-term challenges while also highlighting the collaborative efforts between government entities to develop a sustainable funding model for long-term expansion.
