A Friendship Beyond Hollywood — From The Office to Real-Life Friends
Kaling and Novak first met in 2004 while working on The Office. Much like their on-screen characters, Kelly and Ryan, their real-life relationship had its ups and downs. After dating on and off, they ultimately ended their romantic relationship in 2007 but remained inseparable as friends. Today, Novak is not only one of Kaling’s biggest supporters but also the godfather to her three children.
A Tribute Filled with Humor and Emotion
Novak’s speech was a mix of admiration and playful teasing. He highlighted Kaling’s incredible career—her roles in The Office and The Mindy Project, her work as an executive producer, and her best-selling books. Then, with his signature wit, he joked, “At this point, after all these successes, you also just know her from being famous, and that’s the part I want to say a few words about.”

Kaling’s Unique Take on Fame
Novak humorously described Kaling’s fascination with Hollywood’s glitz and drama, from red carpet gossip to “who wore it better” debates. But beneath the humor was a deeper message—her understanding of fame and how it impacts people. “She knows it can be fun and inspiring, but also false and misleading,” he said. “Even though it’s a job you can never fully control, it’s a job she handles beautifully.”
An Emotional Moment
As Novak wrapped up his speech, he turned sentimental, expressing how everyone in Kaling’s life always believed in her success. “We always knew you would be famous, but we had no idea how beautifully you’d handle the job,” he said. In a final touch of humor, he added, “You’d be on the walk of talent if they had one. You’d be on the walk of friendship. You’d be on the walk of compassionate parenthood. But let’s face it, all of these would be terrible field trips. So here you are instead, very deservedly, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
Kaling’s Heartfelt Response
The love wasn’t one-sided. Kaling took a moment to thank Novak, calling him an integral part of her life. “Sometimes I forget the reason I know him is because we worked together professionally,” she admitted. “I’m just as starstruck by him now, at 29, as I was when I first met him at 24. I love you.”
