A tragic incident unfolded in Baltimore as a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in its collapse and the presumed deaths of six individuals who were part of a construction crew. Here's what we know so far about this devastating event.

The collision occurred early Tuesday morning when the Dali cargo ship issued a distress call, reporting a loss of power just moments before the crash. Despite the warning, the ship continued toward the bridge at a high rate of speed, according to Maryland Governor Wes Moore. The impact caused a section of the 1.6-mile bridge to break apart and fall into the water below.

The six missing individuals were construction workers tasked with repairing potholes on the bridge. They were working in the middle of the span when it collapsed, according to Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders.

An inspection of the Dali conducted last June in Chile identified a problem with the ship's propulsion and auxiliary machinery, though specifics were not provided. However, a subsequent inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York in September found no deficiencies. Despite passing inspection, the ship struck the bridge support with significant force, leading to its collapse.

Experts noted that while the bridge had been rated in fair condition during a federal inspection last June, it lacked protection against the force of a collision with a vessel the size of the Dali. Roberto Leon, a Virginia Tech engineering professor, explained that the impact of such a large ship exceeds the bridge's ability to withstand it.

Following the collision, two individuals were rescued from the water, but the search continues for the six missing workers. Multiple vehicles also fell into the water, though officials believe they were unoccupied.

The impact of the bridge collapse extends beyond the tragic loss of life. The closure of the bridge is expected to create significant logistical challenges for the region, disrupting both ship and commuter traffic. Baltimore's port serves as a crucial hub for shipping on the East Coast, and the collapse will likely disrupt cargo operations for months or even years.

President Joe Biden has pledged federal support for the reconstruction of the bridge, emphasizing the importance of restoring vital infrastructure. While Baltimore is not a major port for container vessels, its facilities play a key role in the transportation of goods such as farm equipment and automobiles.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures to prevent such tragedies. Leon suggested that advancements in technology, such as bridge cameras and sensors, could help detect and prevent similar accidents in the future.

While rare, bridge collapses due to ship collisions have occurred in the past, with notable incidents resulting in fatalities. The Baltimore bridge collapse serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of such accidents and underscores the need for ongoing vigilance in maintaining and protecting critical infrastructure.
