People offer funeral prayers for leading Bangladeshi activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who died from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in Dhaka earlier this month, outside the nation’s Parliament complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025.

Bangladesh entered a day of grief and uncertainty on Saturday as the nation mourned Sharif Osman Hadi, a slain political activist. His death has intensified tensions ahead of the February elections, raising concerns about stability during a fragile democratic transition.

Hundreds of thousands gathered in Dhaka to attend his funeral, turning the event into a powerful political statement.

Funeral Draws Massive Crowds in Dhaka

Large crowds assembled outside Bangladesh’s Parliament complex for Hadi’s funeral prayers. Security was tight across the capital as authorities prepared for unrest.

The government declared Saturday a national day of mourning after Hadi’s body returned from Singapore late Friday.

Mourners waved national flags and raised slogans promising to continue his fight. Emotions ran high throughout the ceremony.

Who Was Sharif Osman Hadi

Sharif Osman Hadi was a spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho, a cultural and political platform. He played a visible role in last year’s uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.

Hadi was known for sharp criticism of both Hasina and neighboring India. He had announced plans to contest the upcoming elections as an independent candidate from a key Dhaka constituency.

Supporters viewed him as a symbol of resistance and political change.

Deadly Attack and Final Hours

Hadi was shot during an attack in Dhaka on December 12. He later died from gunshot wounds at a hospital in Singapore on Thursday.

Police said suspects have been identified. Investigators believe the shooter may have fled to India.

This claim added strain to already tense diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Diplomatic Tensions with India Escalate

Following the police statement, Bangladesh and India exchanged diplomatic summons. New Delhi called in Bangladesh’s envoy earlier this week.

Dhaka responded by summoning the Indian envoy. The issue has deepened political friction during a sensitive election period.

India has not commented publicly on the suspect’s alleged presence.

Violence Erupts After Death Announcement

News of Hadi’s death triggered immediate unrest. Groups of protesters attacked and set fire to offices of two leading national newspapers.

Interim leader Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, urged citizens to remain calm. He appealed for restraint as investigations continued.

Authorities increased patrols to prevent further violence.

Burial at a Symbolic Site

Hadi will be buried on the Dhaka University campus, beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Supporters say the location reflects Hadi’s cultural influence and political ideals. The burial is expected to draw further crowds.

Chants echoed promises that his death would not be forgotten.

Bangladesh’s Fragile Political Transition

Bangladesh is navigating a delicate transition under Yunus’s interim government. The aim is to restore democracy through credible elections.

The absence of Hasina’s Awami League, one of the country’s two major parties, has reshaped the political field.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, hopes to form the next government.

Islamist Party Seeks Greater Influence

The Jamaat-e-Islami party is also seeking expanded political space. It leads an alliance attempting to gain influence amid shifting power dynamics.

The party carries historical baggage linked to the 1971 independence war, making its rise controversial.

Analysts say the evolving landscape increases uncertainty before the elections.

Unresolved Hasina Extradition Issue

Sheikh Hasina has lived in exile in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024. She was later sentenced to death on charges of crimes against humanity.

The Yunus-led government has repeatedly requested her extradition. India has not responded to those requests.

The issue remains a major political flashpoint.

A Nation at a Crossroads

The killing of Sharif Osman Hadi has become a defining moment ahead of the Bangladesh elections.

As grief turns into political mobilization, the coming weeks will test the country’s ability to maintain peace.

For many supporters, Hadi’s death has strengthened resolve rather than silenced dissent.
