Barbie is celebrating the late Aaliyah, one of the most iconic voices of the 1990s, by unveiling a collectible doll in her honor. Available from January 16, Aaliyah’s 46th birthday, this doll is part of Barbie's Music Collector Series. Aaliyah, often referred to as the “Princess of R&B,” tragically passed away in 2001 at just 22, but her contributions to music and fashion continue to inspire.

Aaliyah revolutionized contemporary R&B and hip-hop with her unique voice and style, influencing a generation of artists. To pay tribute to her legacy, Barbie's design team worked closely with Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, ensuring the doll captured Aaliyah's trendsetting look, particularly from her unforgettable "One in a Million" music video. The doll wears a black faux leather outfit complete with studded lace-up details, a zippered vest, and stylish shades. Aaliyah's signature hairstyle, with a swoop of hair over one eye, completes the striking ensemble.

Rashad Haughton shared his thoughts, recalling how his sister enjoyed playing with Barbie dolls as a child, even making them perform concerts. "She was imagining the future she would eventually live," Haughton said, adding that Aaliyah would be "ecstatic" to see her legacy celebrated in this way.

Aaliyah’s career skyrocketed with the release of her debut single, "Back & Forth," in 1994. Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including three American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and five Grammy nominations. Her influence in both music and fashion was profound, and this Barbie doll release is a fitting tribute to her trailblazing impact.

This launch also marks a significant moment for Barbie's Music Collector Series, which has previously honored music legends such as Gloria Estefan, Elton John, and Stevie Nicks. Mattel hopes that the Aaliyah Barbie will inspire confidence in her fans and collectors, reminding them that, like Aaliyah, they too can unlock their potential and achieve their dreams.

Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls at Mattel, emphasized the importance of the doll: “We hope the Aaliyah Barbie serves as a powerful reminder to her loyal fans and Barbie collectors everywhere that, like Aaliyah, they can unlock their limitless potential and achieve anything they set their minds to.”

For fans and collectors, the Aaliyah Barbie is more than just a doll – it is a symbol of Aaliyah’s enduring influence. The doll is available for purchase through digital mass retailers such as Mattel Shop, Walmart, and Amazon, making it accessible for those looking to honor the late singer’s legacy.
