Residents along British Columbia’s coast are being warned to prepare for several days of heavy rain and powerful winds beginning Thursday. Forecasters say a series of strong storm systems will sweep across the province, bringing the risk of flooding, road closures, and power outages.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued flood watch bulletins for the northern and central coast, including the Skeena River and its surrounding tributaries. The agency warns that rising water levels could cause rivers to overflow, especially in low-lying areas.
Storms Moving South by Friday
The storm system is expected to move further south by Friday, prompting a high streamflow advisory for the south coast. Areas under watch include southern Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, the Lower Mainland, and the Sea to Sky region.
These regions could see significant rainfall and gusty winds through the weekend, with some areas potentially receiving torrential downpours that could lead to flash flooding or localized washouts.
Warnings From Emergency Officials
The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness urged residents to prepare early. “With wet ground and many trees still holding their leaves, strong winds can frequently uproot trees or break branches,” the ministry said Wednesday. “Be prepared for power interruptions from tree damage or downed power lines.”
The ministry also encouraged people to keep storm drains clear to prevent neighbourhood flooding. Those living near creeks or rivers are being asked to monitor conditions closely and stay alert for local flood advisories.
Environment Canada’s Forecast
Meteorologists predict high winds and heavy rain for much of the north, central, and south coast, including Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Gusts could reach damaging levels in some areas, particularly near coastal inlets and exposed shorelines.
Emergency officials said weather alerts could be issued as conditions worsen, especially for communities facing potential flooding or landslides.
How Residents Can Prepare
Authorities are urging everyone in affected areas to take precautions now. “People are urged to take precautions to ensure personal safety,” the ministry said. “Start by developing a household emergency plan and learning how your local government will respond during an emergency.”
Officials recommend assembling a household emergency kit and grab-and-go bags for each family member in case evacuation orders are issued. Items such as flashlights, bottled water, blankets, and non-perishable food are considered essential.
Travellers are also advised to check DriveBC for up-to-date road conditions before heading out, as heavy rain could trigger washouts, debris flows, or closures on mountain routes.
With the storm series expected to last several days, residents are being reminded to stay cautious and prepared as B.C.’s coast faces another round of challenging fall weather.
