New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) says one final farewell at a funeral in ‘Blue Bloods’ finale. CBS.

December 14, 2024

After 14 unforgettable seasons, Blue Bloods aired its final episode on Friday, delivering a mix of heartbreak, joy, and long-awaited resolutions. From a devastating death and a dramatic shooting spree to a secret marriage and a new pregnancy, the beloved CBS police procedural gave fans a rollercoaster finale.

As expected, the show concluded in its signature style: with the Reagan family gathered around the dining table for their traditional Sunday dinner, led by patriarch Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck), New York City's police commissioner. Over 288 episodes, these meals symbolized the heart of the series, offering viewers a glimpse into the unity and resilience of the law-enforcement family.

A Fitting Tribute to a Legacy
The finale was dedicated to Leonard Goldberg, the late creator and executive producer, whose vision of family dinners helped define the show's identity. Tom Selleck, who joined the cast in 2010, credited these moments for the show’s enduring success.

“That meal, at the end of the episode, and Leonard's gift of casting are probably why we are still around," Selleck shared earlier this year.

In the final episode, Frank presides over the dinner table one last time, surrounded by his growing family, including his father Henry (Len Cariou), Detective Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), ADA Erin (Bridget Moynahan), and Detective Jamie (Will Estes). There are jokes about needing a bigger table, but the warmth and camaraderie remain unchanged.

Looking around the table, Frank delivers a heartfelt closing line: "I couldn’t be more proud… or grateful."

Tragedy and New Beginnings
The finale doesn't shy away from drama. Officer Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray) is shaken by the tragic death of her partner, Officer Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan), during a shooting spree that also leaves Mayor Peter Chase (Dylan Walsh) gravely injured. In a moving farewell, officers honor Luis with a bagpipe-filled funeral.

Despite her grief, Eddie brings unexpected joy to the Reagan household by announcing her pregnancy in a clever reveal involving her childhood high chair. Her husband, Jamie, beams with pride, and the family celebrates the happy news.

Erin, however, chooses to hold back her own big announcement: she and her ex-husband, Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann), have rekindled their romance and secretly remarried. Instead of stealing the spotlight, Erin opts to focus on Eddie and Jamie’s moment, leaving her revelation for another day.

A New Chapter for Danny and Maria
Meanwhile, Danny Reagan takes a leap of faith in his personal life. Encouraged by his grandfather Henry to find love again, the widower asks his partner, Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), out for pizza. Her warm acceptance hints at a promising future, though it’s too soon for Maria to join the iconic family dinner table.

High-Stakes Drama and One Last Triumph for Frank Reagan
The episode also features a gripping standoff between Frank and Lorenzo Batista (Edward James Olmos), the father of the shooting suspect. Frank convinces Batista to reveal his son’s location, ultimately leading to the shooter’s arrest. In a poignant scene, Frank visits the recovering mayor and places the bullet that nearly killed him on the bedside table, a stark reminder of how close tragedy came.

With the case closed, the mayor safe, and the family united, Blue Bloods ends on a high note, celebrating the themes of loyalty, love, and justice that made it a fan favorite.

And just like that, Blue Bloods is history.
