Kevin Gausman delivered one of his sharpest performances of the season as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 in a crucial division battle on Monday night. With precision and power, Gausman shut down New York’s heavy hitters, proving once again why he’s Toronto’s go-to ace in high-stakes games.
Firing Fast in the First
Historically, the first two innings haven’t been Gausman’s strength. But that changed Monday night.
He set the tone early by striking out both Trent Grisham and two-time MVP Aaron Judge in the first inning. That strong start told Gausman everything he needed to know about how his night would go.
“When I can command my fastball and land splitters early, I feel confident I’ll go deep,” Gausman shared.
Mastering the Matchup Against Judge
Judge battled hard but couldn’t break Gausman’s rhythm. After falling behind 2-0 in their first encounter, Gausman delivered a mix of high-velocity four-seamers and a devastating splitter to get the strikeout.
Their next duel in the fifth inning was even more intense. With a runner on third and two outs, Gausman jumped ahead in the count. Judge fought back to 2-2, fouling off three straight fastballs before finally popping up a splitter to end the threat.
“That’s a mano a mano moment,” Gausman said. “If he scores, it changes the game. But I trusted my best stuff.”
Gausman acknowledged Judge’s track record against him but didn’t back down. “He’s a two-time MVP for a reason. He’s got me before, but I’ve struck him out a few too.”
Veteran Composure Shines
Gausman ended his night with eight strikeouts and just one run allowed across seven innings. His cool presence on the mound gave the Blue Jays exactly what they needed to kick off the series.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised the outing. “Kev was in total control. That fifth-inning battle with Judge was huge. That’s the kind of performance you expect from a veteran starter.”
The 41,786 fans at Rogers Centre gave Gausman a loud ovation after the key fifth-inning showdown, especially when catcher Alejandro Kirk secured the inning-ending popup.
Blue Jays Keep Rolling at Home
The win marked Toronto’s fourth in a row and their seventh in the last 10 games. The team now leads the AL East by four games over the Yankees.
With a 36-16 home record, the Blue Jays are the league’s top team on home turf. They’ve also won 11 straight at Rogers Centre—a franchise best.
“The fans have been amazing,” said Schneider. “When you look up and see a full stadium before the first pitch, it fires us up.”
Setting the Tone for the Series
Gausman knows the importance of going deep in the opener of a key series. “Anytime you can give your bullpen rest in Game 1, it helps the whole series,” he said. “Against a division rival, it’s even more valuable.”
The Yankees still have two more games in Toronto, but the Blue Jays are in full control—thanks in large part to Kevin Gausman’s clutch stuff and leadership on the mound.
