A tragic crash on a Manitoba highway has claimed the lives of a Winnipeg musician and his partner. The incident happened on Tuesday, just a day before Brendan Berg’s 43rd birthday.

Crash Near Swan River

Police reported a serious collision north of Swan River. A southbound vehicle crossed the center line and crashed into another car that appeared to be parked. The impact caused the parked vehicle to flip over.

Two men in the moving car sustained critical injuries. A 42-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman in the second vehicle died in the hospital.

Victims Identified

The 42-year-old man was Brendan Berg, the bassist of Winnipeg indie pop band Royal Canoe. He died alongside Olivia Michalczuk, who was also in the car.

A Huge Loss for the Music Community

Royal Canoe confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media. They described Brendan as a kind and dedicated bandmate who had been with them through years of tours and studio work.

The band praised his positive energy and helpful spirit. “Brendan’s big smile and generous nature kept us grounded,” they wrote. “He was always the first to help — picking up the trailer or lifting gear without being asked.”

They added, “His generosity and selflessness were legendary.”

Remembering Olivia

The band also shared their sorrow over Olivia’s death. “Her energy brought out the best in Brendan,” they said. “Losing her too makes this loss even harder to accept.”

Both families are being supported during this painful time.
