After the light-heartedness of April Fools' Day, the Calgary Food Bank took a serious approach to address hunger in the community. Teaming up with QR Calgary, Global Calgary, Bowest Appliances, and World of Spas, they initiated the inaugural April Foods Day.

During March, both Bowest Appliances and World of Spas accepted donations at their respective stores. On April 3, 2024, the QR Calgary team collected the donated goods, totaling approximately 680 pounds of food, and delivered them directly to the Calgary Food Bank's premises.

Melissa From, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the community's support, highlighting the heartwarming unity displayed to aid those in need. She emphasized the significance of community engagement, particularly during challenging times, stating, "It means a lot. Our community steps up in incredible ways every day to ensure we can feed Calgarians. That being said, it has been a really tough couple of years."

Stephanie Campbell, a dedicated volunteer at the food bank for five years, shed light on the ongoing battle against food insecurity, remarking that "all of us are not that far from having to be here."

Recent data from Food Banks Canada's Hunger Count report revealed a record-high usage of food banks nationwide, including Calgary. In March 2023, there were nearly two million visits to food banks across Canada, representing a significant 32 percent increase compared to March 2022.

From stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, "The need has never been greater." She attributed the rise in demand to various factors, including the city's growth, along with everyday economic pressures such as inflation, increased mortgages, and living costs.

In this challenging environment, community collaborations like April Foods Day play a pivotal role. Campbell emphasized the impact even modest contributions can have on individuals' lives, emphasizing the collective effort required to combat hunger effectively.

"If we're just a little part of someone's story... how far that really goes," Campbell reflected.

The success of April Foods Day underscores the importance of community involvement in addressing pressing social issues like hunger. By mobilizing resources and fostering partnerships, organizations like the Calgary Food Bank can make meaningful strides towards alleviating food insecurity and supporting vulnerable individuals and families in the community.
