Several Canadian airports faced bomb threats early Thursday morning. The incidents led to delays, evacuations, and temporary service shutdowns at key air traffic control centers.
The threats targeted NAV Canada offices in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. NAV Canada controls air traffic at these airports. The threats forced a quick response across the country.
Service Returns to Normal
NAV Canada later confirmed that all operations are now running normally. However, they advised travelers to check directly with their airlines. Some flight delays might still happen as schedules return to normal.
The agency issued a statement saying, “Following this morning’s security threat at multiple NAV CANADA sites, all operations have now returned to normal. Travelers are encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates, as delays may still occur.”
They also thanked travelers and airlines for staying patient. NAV Canada praised both its staff and law enforcement for acting fast and handling the situation well.
Details Still Under Investigation
Officials have not revealed the full details of the threat. NAV Canada explained that they can't share the nature of the bomb threats for safety reasons.
They said, “In the interest of security protocols, we cannot disclose the specific nature of the threat. However, we will continue to work closely with authorities as the investigation progresses.”
Local Airport Responses
At Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, the air traffic control tower was evacuated for a while. A spokesperson confirmed that the evacuation caused some flight delays. However, service returned to normal later in the day.
In Ottawa, the airport shared an update through social media. Their post read, “The security investigation at YOW has safely concluded and regular operations are resuming. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”
The Winnipeg Airport Authority reported only slight disruptions. “We are not expecting any further delays as the issue has been resolved,” their statement read. They advised media to contact NAV Canada for more information.
RCMP Investigates Winnipeg Threat
The RCMP confirmed they received a bomb threat at Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport around 6:05 a.m. Thursday. The threat involved a claim that there was a bomb in the airport’s control tower.
Police searched the tower thoroughly. They reported finding no suspicious devices or materials.
Other Airports Also Impacted
The Edmonton International Airport also issued a brief statement. They said safety remains their top concern and confirmed a security issue occurred. It had only a minor effect on daily operations. The airport directed further inquiries to NAV Canada.
