In Ottawa, the Canadian men's volleyball team kicked off the second week of action in the Volleyball Nations League with a hard-won triumph over Cuba at TD Place on Tuesday evening.

Despite already securing a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics, the Canadian team, led by coach Tuomas Sammelvuo, is determined to maintain peak performance for the Summer Games, showcasing their determination in the matches held in Ottawa.

In a best-of-five match, Canada managed to secure victory over Cuba with a scoreline of 3-1, winning sets 25-21, 25-27, 25-20, and 28-26.

While Canada exhibited dominance in blocking, leading 18-6 in blocks, both teams made equal errors, totaling 25 each. Eric Loeppky from Steinbach, Manitoba, emerged as Canada's top scorer, contributing 22 points, closely followed by Stephen Marr from Aurora, Ontario, who tallied 20 points.

Cuba's Marlon Yant Herrera led their team's scoring with 23 points, with Miguel Angel Lopez Castro adding 18 more.

Expressing his thoughts on the match, Marr acknowledged the resilience of the Cuban team, highlighting their strong spiking ability. He emphasized the importance of team cohesion and organization in overcoming skilled opponents, noting the significance of maintaining unity, particularly in challenging situations. Marr expressed satisfaction with Canada's performance, citing gradual improvement as a positive sign for future matches.

Coach Sammelvuo commended his team's defensive prowess, particularly their effectiveness in blocking against a physically imposing Cuban team. He also highlighted their efficiency in attacking, despite a few errors, as a key factor contributing to their victory.

Looking ahead, Canada is set to face off against 2020 Olympic bronze medalists Argentina on Thursday, followed by matches against the United States on Saturday and Serbia on Sunday.

The Volleyball Nations League holds added significance this year, as teams prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics, while others vie for qualification through rankings, intensifying competition among participating nations.
