Canada's journey to the Copa America semifinals has been a rollercoaster of close matches and thrilling moments under the guidance of coach Jesse Marsch. Despite their limited scoring, Ismaël Koné's crucial goal in the shootout secured Canada's victory over Venezuela, advancing them 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. This win denied Venezuela a chance to reach the Copa America semifinals for the first time since 2011.

Canada, one of the few teams to progress from group play with just one goal, continued their run after a goalless draw against Chile. Coach Marsch acknowledged the need for more goals but praised his team's strong performances against formidable opponents, indicating positive growth.

Jacob Shaffelburg opened the scoring for Canada in the 13th minute, but Salomón Rondón equalized for Venezuela in the 64th minute, setting the stage for a tense finish. The victory set up a rematch for 48th-ranked Canada against Lionel Messi's Argentina, the top-ranked team and defending Copa America champions.

The match against Venezuela saw both teams score three times in the initial five rounds of penalties, forcing an extra round. Maxime Crépeau's pivotal saves and Ismaël Koné's composed finish sealed the win, silencing the pro-Venezuelan crowd at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium.

Reflecting on the match, Marsch highlighted Koné's nerve in the shootout and admitted tactical adjustments could have come earlier. Meanwhile, Venezuela's efforts, including Rondón's critical goal and Eduard Bello's near miss, showcased their determination but ultimately fell short.

Venezuela, aiming to qualify for their first World Cup in 2026, expressed disappointment at missing out on the Copa America semifinals. Coach Fernando Batista emphasized the long-term vision for Venezuelan football, underscoring their ambition to strengthen the squad and achieve World Cup qualification.

Canada's Liam Millar had a chance late in the game but missed, setting the stage for a dramatic shootout conclusion where both teams exchanged misses before Canada emerged victorious. Marsch asserted Canada's superiority on the day despite the unpredictable nature of penalty shootouts.

In summary, Canada's path to the Copa America semifinals has been defined by resilience and strategic play, overcoming scoring challenges to secure crucial wins. Their upcoming clash with Argentina promises another intense showdown, as Canada seeks to continue their surprising run in the tournament.
