Canada helped only seven of its citizens leave Israel and the West Bank on Wednesday. These individuals took buses arranged by the Canadian government to Jordan. This was part of Canada’s evacuation efforts following rising tensions in the region.
The number of people who used the government’s help was smaller than expected. Officials noted that most Canadians seem to have found their own ways to leave.
Flights See Low Turnout
A special flight from Jordan left for Athens on Tuesday. The plane had 265 available seats. However, only 95 Canadians used the flight. Many chose to make travel plans on their own, likely through commercial routes.
Officials said they understand that the interest in government-supported travel has been limited so far.
Support Near Iran
Canada doesn’t have any embassies in Iran. Still, consular officials are helping at the borders of nearby countries. They are guiding Canadians on how to return home safely. These officials are helping travellers find commercial flights or other routes.
Since June 13, around 800 Canadians have left Israel, Iran, and the West Bank combined. That was the date when Israel and Iran began launching missile strikes at one another.
Ceasefire Helps Flights Resume
Both countries agreed to stop firing missiles, which led to a temporary ceasefire. This break in violence allowed airlines to restart flights at Tel Aviv airport. The return of commercial flights has helped many Canadians travel without the government’s direct help.
Still, Canada remains on alert and ready to assist those who need it.
Canadians Continue Reaching Out
Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre has stayed busy throughout the crisis. The centre has received more than 6,000 calls and messages from Canadians asking for help.
Officials say that everyone who contacted them for help leaving the area has been given full details on available ways to travel. No request has gone unanswered.
Thousands of Canadians Still in the Region
As of Wednesday, nearly 6,000 Canadians have registered as being in Israel. Around 5,500 are in Iran, while about 450 are in the West Bank or Gaza.
Global Affairs Canada encourages citizens to register with the government while abroad. This helps officials track their location and offer support during emergencies.
Although only a small group used the buses this time, the Canadian government remains active in making sure its citizens are safe.
