Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed on Sunday that Canada will deliver a new $2-billion military aid package to Ukraine. The announcement came during his unplanned trip to Kyiv for Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations.

Carney first introduced the funding during the G7 summit in Alberta in June. On this visit, he revealed where the money will go and what Ukraine will receive.

Breakdown of military aid

The package sets aside $835 million to buy critical supplies for Ukraine’s war effort against Russia. This includes vehicles, medical equipment, and different kinds of arms.

Another $680 million will fund NATO-approved purchases. These include U.S.-made weapons, munitions, and air defence systems.

Canada also pledged $220 million to boost drones, counter-drone systems, and electronic warfare tools. This part of the aid will be developed jointly by Canadian and Ukrainian companies.

The remaining funds will support Ukraine’s defence operations and the sourcing of ammunition and explosives.

Canada’s ongoing commitment

The federal government says Canada has now given $22 billion in financial support since the war began. Most of that money has been sent as loans.

Carney also announced $31 million in humanitarian aid to support recovery and rebuilding. This will include projects that strengthen digital resilience, counter disinformation, and improve citizen trust in Ukraine’s democracy.

Stronger ties with Ukraine

Canada signed a customs mutual assistance agreement with Ukraine on Sunday. This deal allows Canada Border Services Agency to share information with Ukrainian officials. The goal is to tackle customs fraud, smuggling, and other trade crimes more effectively.

The visit underlined Canada’s close partnership with Ukraine and its continued promise to stand beside the country as it fights for independence and prepares for future rebuilding.
