Canada is now allowed to export beef to Australia again, ending a ban that lasted over two decades. Global News
Canada can now send beef to Australia again. This is the first time since 2003 that the market has opened. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) shared this big news today. This deal gives Canadian farmers a new chance to grow their businesses.
Big Boost for Canadian Farmers and Economy
This new market access means more money for Canadian beef producers. It helps farmers, food processors, and local workers across the country. Selling beef in Australia brings in new profits. This helps create more jobs and support small towns.
Top-Quality Beef Gets Global Reach
Canada is known for producing safe, top-quality beef. In 2021, a global health group said Canada’s risk of BSE (mad cow disease) is very low. That shows Canada’s food system is strong, clean, and trustworthy.
Australia Welcomes Canadian Beef
This reopening is part of Canada’s plan to grow trade in the Indo-Pacific region. Canada wants to build closer ties with countries in that area. That’s why it is working hard to open more markets for Canadian farm goods.
Leaders Speak on New Deal
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Heath MacDonald, said:
"Canada is known around the world for producing top-quality beef — and that's a testament to the hard work of our producers. Strengthening our trade ties with Australia—one of our key partners in the Indo-Pacific—means more opportunities for Canadian farmers and processors to grow their businesses, create good jobs, and build up our economy. The Government of Canada is absolutely committed to supporting the industry as we open new doors, drive growth, and showcase the best of Canada to the world."
Paul MacKinnon, President of CFIA, added:
"This regained access to the Australian market is a testament to the cooperation between the CFIA, the Canadian beef industry and our trading partners. CFIA's commitment to science-based decision-making and rigorous inspection standards helps to uphold Canada's global reputation for excellence in food safety and animal health. This achievement not only reflects the strength of our system and the value of Canada's high-quality beef internationally but also supports the livelihoods of Canadian workers and families who rely on this industry."
Canada Keeps Expanding Trade
Canada exported a lot of beef in 2024. It ranked 8th in the world by volume. In total, Canada’s agri-food exports (excluding fish) reached $92.2 billion in 2024. That’s up from $91.6 billion in 2023.
Canada launched its Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2022. The goal is to grow trade in that region. As part of this, Canada opened a special office in Manila in February 2024. A mobile team there works to grow trade and find new business opportunities.
Why Australia Blocked Beef Before
Australia stopped buying Canadian beef in 2003. This was after Canada found its first case of BSE. But now, with Canada’s low-risk status confirmed, those fears are gone. This shows Canada's beef is safe again for the world.
