Canada has secured its place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals after a strong 2-0 win over El Salvador. The match, played on Tuesday night, showcased Canada's attacking strength and composure. With this win, Canada topped Group B with seven points and will now face Guatemala in the quarterfinals on Sunday in Minneapolis.
David and Buchanan Lead Canada’s Attack
Canada’s victory was powered by quick back-to-back goals in the second half. Jonathan David opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. He collected a pass from Mathieu Choinière, turned smoothly, and fired a precise shot past El Salvador’s goalkeeper Mario González.
This goal marked David’s record-breaking 35th goal for Canada in just 66 appearances.
Just minutes later, Tajon Buchanan doubled the lead. In the 56th minute, Buchanan received a clever ball from Niko Sigur, who had intercepted a poor pass. Buchanan then chipped the ball gracefully over the goalkeeper, making it 2-0.
El Salvador Crumbles Under Pressure
El Salvador's hopes of advancing were crushed not only by Canada's goals but by disciplinary issues. Santos Ortíz was ejected in the 35th minute after receiving two yellow cards, the second for a reckless tackle.
Just before the halftime whistle, Jairo Henríquez was shown a red card for elbowing Alistair Johnston in the head. That left El Salvador down to nine men for the entire second half.
Their collapse was complete. El Salvador finished bottom of the group with just one point and failed to score in all group matches—becoming the 14th team in tournament history to exit without a goal.
Canada Looks Ahead to Guatemala Clash
With this win, Canada moves into the quarterfinals against Guatemala, who beat Guadeloupe 3-2 in Houston. The winner will go on to face either the U.S. or Costa Rica in the semifinals.
Canada will be aiming to continue its momentum. Coach Jesse Marsch, returning from a two-game suspension, looked satisfied with the team's discipline and strategy.
Marsch had missed the opening two games due to a suspension stemming from his conduct during a CONCACAF Nations League match against the U.S. in March. His return seemed to inject fresh energy into the squad.
