Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., made Canada proud on Sunday by winning gold in the men's hammer throw at the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old athlete set an Olympic record with his very first throw, launching the hammer an impressive 84.12 meters. This outstanding performance secured Canada's first gold in this event.
Katzberg was thrilled with his achievement. “I wasn’t sure I’d win gold, but I prepared for a strong first throw,” he said. “It felt great. I thought it might be enough, but I kept trying to improve my distance throughout the competition. Thankfully, the 84-meter throw clinched it.”

Katzberg, the reigning world champion, also recorded the second-best throw of the day at 82.28 meters. No other competitor reached the 80-meter mark. Reflecting on his performance, Katzberg told CBC Sports, “With the training leading up to this, I knew I could hit 84 meters. To do it in the first round was an unbeatable feeling.”

At 22, Katzberg is the youngest Olympic champion in men's hammer throw history. He had already made waves by winning gold in his world championship debut last year.

Hungary's Bence Halasz took silver with a throw of 79.97 meters, while Mykhaylo Kokhan from Ukraine earned bronze with a 79.39-meter throw. Kokhan expressed his admiration for Katzberg’s throw, saying, “I’ve hit 80 meters many times this season, but today, only Ethan could throw over 80. He probably could have hit 86 meters.”

Another Canadian, Rowan Hamilton from Chilliwack, B.C., finished ninth with a throw of 76.59 meters. Hamilton had been second in the qualifying round, just behind Katzberg.

This gold marks a historic achievement for Canada, as the last Olympic medal in hammer throw was won 112 years ago by Duncan Gillis, who claimed silver in Stockholm in 1912.

Defending Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki of Poland finished seventh, while his fellow Pole, five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek, came in fifth.

Katzberg’s triumph has not only brought glory to Canada but also set a new standard in the hammer throw, showcasing his incredible talent and determination.
