Soldiers from Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) were seen walking past Buckingham Palace and the Queen Victoria Memorial on July 11, 2025. They were heading toward Hyde Park Barracks in London to begin their guard duty. The photo was shared by the Canadian Armed Forces and shows the team in full uniform during their ceremonial march. Twenty-four Canadian soldiers are proudly serving as the King’s Life Guard at the official entrance of Buckingham Palace. This ceremonial role began recently and will continue until July 21. These soldiers belong to the Edmonton-based Lord Strathcona’s Horse regiment and have traveled to London for this special duty.
Third Time Canadians Guard the Royal Entrance
This marks only the third time that a non-British unit has performed this role. All three times, Canadians took on the honor. In 2000, the Lord Strathcona’s Horse regiment did it for their 100th anniversary. In 2012, the RCMP took part during Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Now, in 2025, the Strathcona’s regiment returns to the role.
Guarding Key Royal Sites
The King’s Life Guard protects Horse Guards, which serves as the official entrance to both Buckingham and St. James’s Palaces. It also guards Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. The assignment includes riding on horseback and standing watch in full uniform — a job that combines tradition and pride.
New Challenges with Larger Horses
The Canadian soldiers had to adjust quickly to the horses used in London. These horses are larger than the ones they usually ride back home. However, the team trained hard and adapted well for the ceremony. Their polished performance reflects weeks of preparation and strong discipline.
A Gesture of Unity Between Nations
The Canadian high commission in London posted on X, calling this mission a “proud moment” for Canada. It said the event symbolizes Canada's independence and its strong relationship with close allies. It also shows Canada's continued role in international partnerships.
Royal Approval from King Charles
King Charles personally approved the regiment’s service as part of the Life Guard. His support for Canada remains strong. Just a few weeks ago, he visited Ottawa to deliver the throne speech in Parliament — a rare event. Only two other monarchs have done so before him.
Canada Stands Firm as a Nation
This royal visit came as Canada faces growing political tension. Some voices in the United States have called for Canada to join as the 51st state. In response, Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, have stood firm on the country’s sovereignty. The King’s presence and Canada’s role at Buckingham Palace send a strong message about unity and pride.
