Marvel Studios’ latest superhero adventure, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to hit theaters this Friday, bringing Anthony Mackie back as Sam Wilson. The film follows his journey as he fully embraces the role of Captain America, a mantle passed to him by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame.
The movie has been a long time coming. First announced in April 2021, it faced multiple delays, initially scheduled for a July 2024 release before being pushed back due to industry strikes. Now, under the direction of Julius Onah, it finally makes its way to the big screen.
A Star-Studded Cast & High Stakes
Alongside Mackie, the film features Hollywood legend Harrison Ford as General Ross, a character previously portrayed by the late William Hurt. Fans familiar with Marvel’s storyline know that Ross has a dangerous transformation—one that won’t sit well with Wilson. The movie also introduces Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, a role teased in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. Additional cast members include Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Giancarlo Esposito, adding more depth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
First Reactions: Mixed Responses from Critics & Fans
Ahead of its official release, social media has been flooded with first reactions from early screenings. While some praise the film’s action and entertainment value, others find it lacking originality.
Film critic Jazz Tangcay raved about it, urging fans to watch it on the biggest screen possible. “It does what it should—entertains! Anthony Mackie is fantastic as Captain America. A great addition to the MCU.”
Ben Kendrick had a more measured take, acknowledging both strengths and flaws. “It’s exciting and has a timely message, but it’s also just okay in parts. Still, it’s one of the few MCU films post-Endgame that actually moves the story forward.”
Not all reviews were positive. John Flickinger found it underwhelming, calling it “clunky and anticlimactic.” He felt the film played it too safe, making it feel like just another entry in the franchise.
Brittany Patrice shared similar concerns, saying, “This felt like a movie about everyone except Sam Wilson. It missed opportunities and left me underwhelmed.”
Jeff Nelson was even harsher, labeling it a “flat political thriller” with recycled plot points and weak emotional stakes. “Nothing brave about it,” he added.
Up to the Audience
With Captain America: Brave New World set to release on February 14, fans will soon decide for themselves. While the film has split critics, its action-packed sequences and familiar characters may still make it a must-watch for Marvel enthusiasts. Will it soar or stumble?
