Prime Minister Mark Carney has chosen Marc-André Blanchard to be his new chief of staff. Blanchard is a top executive at one of Canada’s biggest pension funds, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ). He will leave his role there to join Carney’s team.
A Strong Background
Blanchard, 59, has worked at CDPQ since 2020. Since 2022, he led the pension fund’s global sustainability efforts. Before joining CDPQ, he served as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations. This experience helped him support the pension fund’s international goals and focus on sustainability.
Blanchard said, “Answering the call to serve my country is a decision I make with humility and enthusiasm.” His diplomatic and executive background makes him well-suited for the new role.
Carney’s Praise
Carney praised Blanchard’s long and impressive career. He called him “one of Canada’s most accomplished builders, legal experts, executives, public servants and diplomats.” Carney shared this on his social media, showing his confidence in Blanchard.
Smooth Transition
The current interim chief of staff, Marco Mendicino, who is a former Liberal minister, will stay in his role until early summer. Mendicino will also support the upcoming Group of Seven meeting in Alberta, set for mid-June.
What This Means
Blanchard’s move signals a focus on sustainability and strong international ties within Carney’s team. His leadership experience in both government and the private sector brings valuable skills to the Prime Minister’s office.
The appointment comes at a busy time, with major global meetings and important political events ahead. Carney’s choice aims to ensure steady leadership and a strong team to face these challenges.
