For decades, Charles Sobhraj was a name that evoked fear across Asia. Nicknamed *“The Serpent”* for his talent at escaping, he lived a life filled with crime, charm, and deception. Now, Netflix is retelling his story through Inspector Zende, spotlighting the Indian officer who caught him—twice.

The Making of a Master Criminal

Sobhraj was born in 1944 in Saigon, then under French rule. By 1963, he was already arrested in Paris for theft. What followed was a decades-long trail of crime spanning France, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India, Thailand, and Malaysia.

He became infamous as the “Bikini Killer”, targeting Western tourists—often young women—along Asia’s Hippie Trail in the 1970s. Drugging, robbing, and murdering his victims, Sobhraj was linked to over 20 killings, though only convicted of three. The true number remains unknown.

 Netflix’s Fresh Take

After The Serpent series in 2021, Netflix returns with Inspector Zende. This film shifts the lens from the criminal to the cop. Actor Jim Sarbh plays the killer, renamed Carl Bhojraj, while Manoj Bajpayee takes on the role of Inspector Madhukar Zende.

The drama focuses on Zende’s dogged pursuit, covering his two daring captures of Sobhraj in the 1970s and 1980s.

The First Chase in Mumbai

In 1971, a petty thief tipped off police about a planned robbery at Mumbai’s New India Assurance building. Zende, then posted at Gamdevi police station, led the operation.

The trail pointed to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, where Sobhraj stayed in a crisp suit, hiding in plain sight. Police raided his network, arresting five accomplices and recovering weapons.

Yet, the master of escape struck again. While hospitalized later that year, Sobhraj used a wartime blackout to slip through drainage pipes and vanish.

Luxury Behind Bars

By 1976, he was back in custody, this time for killing French tourist Jean-Luc Solomon. Sentenced to 12 years in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, Sobhraj lived like royalty. He bribed guards, hosted guests, and turned prison into his personal kingdom.

But in 1986, he stunned authorities again. Hosting a prison party, he spiked sweets with sleeping pills, knocking guards unconscious. Then he drove away in a waiting car. His escape was not just about freedom—it also cleverly kept him in India, shielding him from extradition to Thailand where a death sentence awaited.

The Goa Capture

Once more, Zende was called in. Acting on leads about suspicious bicycles and phone calls from a Goan restaurant, he tracked Sobhraj to O’Coqueiro.

Disguised as a tourist, Zende waited for days. On April 6, 1986, he spotted the fugitive, hat on, trying to blend in. Zende calmly approached and said, “Hello, Charles. How are you?”

Sobhraj reached for his weapon. But within moments, Zende and his team overpowered him. This daring arrest became one of India’s most celebrated police operations.

Prison, Marriage, and Release

Sobhraj’s sentence in India stretched into the late 1990s. Yet, arrogance drove him back into danger. In 2003, he returned to Nepal, where police arrested him for the 1975 murder of American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich. A year later, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 2014, he received another conviction for killing her companion, Canadian Laurent Carrière.

Inside Kathmandu’s jail, he married lawyer Nihita Biswas in 2008. But in 2022, aged 78 and ailing, he secured early release under Nepali law. He returned to Paris, where he now lives freely at 81.

Where Are They Now?

Madhukar Zende, now 88, remains celebrated as one of Mumbai Police’s finest officers. His capture of Sobhraj twice earned him nationwide respect, meetings with leaders like Rajiv Gandhi, and admiration from Bollywood stars.

In interviews, he recalls the painstaking detective work of the 1970s—without today’s surveillance or technology. Patience, sharp instincts, and courage defined his hunt.

Netflix’s Inspector Zende doesn’t just tell the story of a criminal. It revives the legacy of a cop who refused to give up, even against one of the most cunning killers of our time.
