Actor Charlie Hunnam reveals auditioning for Anakin Skywalker, missed Star Wars role. Embraces Rebel Moon in Zack Snyder's universe. (The Wrap)

December 18, 2023

In the realm of Star Wars, Hayden Christensen remains indelibly tied to the character of Anakin Skywalker. Yet, surprising revelations from actor Charlie Hunnam shed light on the close encounter he had with wielding the lightsaber of the famed franchise's central figure.

In a conversation with ET's Ash Crossan before the premiere of his forthcoming film, Rebel Moon, Hunnam verified the persistent rumor about his audition for the role of Anakin Skywalker. He confirmed reaching the stage of meeting with director George Lucas in consideration for the part, a noteworthy opportunity given Lucas's selective engagements with actors. Hunnam recollected the experience, albeit vaguely, noting a palpable sense of nervousness during the encounter.

Reflecting on the meeting, Hunnam candidly admitted to perceiving it as awkward and departed with the distinct feeling that he wouldn't secure the role—an intuition that eventually proved correct. He humorously remarked on the importance of "vibes" in such scenarios.

The journey to casting Anakin Skywalker involved several notable names in contention. Leonardo DiCaprio disclosed his meeting with Lucas at Skywalker Ranch in 2000 but ultimately turned down the role. Ryan Phillippe, Paul Walker, and Devon Sawa were also considered, with Sawa expressing his feelings of disappointment at losing the opportunity.

Conversely, Hayden Christensen's excitement was palpable when he secured the role, expressing eagerness about delving into the Star Wars universe. In an interview shortly after landing the part, the youthful actor revealed his anticipation to portray iconic elements like podracing and employing the Force, expressing his deep-seated connection to the franchise from childhood.

Fast forward to 2022, Christensen reprised his role alongside Ewan McGregor in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, marking his return to the beloved galaxy. Director and executive producer Deborah Chow emphasized the significance of Christensen's return in bridging the narratives of Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader.

Beyond the Obi-Wan series, Christensen reappeared as Anakin in Ahsoka, illustrating the franchise's penchant for revisiting characters within a suitable storyline.

While Hunnam's brush with the Star Wars universe didn't materialize, he enthusiastically embraced his role in Rebel Moon. The film, directed by Zack Snyder, promises an expansive narrative set in a world gripped by conflict. Hunnam portrays Kai, a mercenary and starship pilot recruited by Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, to confront a corrupt regime's oppressive forces.

Expressing excitement about Snyder's vision and the detailed script, Hunnam acknowledged the level of dedication Snyder poured into the project. Regarding his character, he humorously admitted to letting the role dictate its direction, a departure from his usual approach to acting.
