While it is intended to help people with everyday tasks, the agent’s potential power means OpenAI has felt the need to introduce safeguards to ensure no agents enable the creation of biological hazards.
OpenAI has launched a major upgrade to ChatGPT, turning the popular chatbot into a fully functional AI-powered personal assistant. This advanced agent can now perform a wide range of tasks — from booking restaurant tables to shopping online — all while managing files, browsing the web, and interacting with productivity tools like spreadsheets and presentations.
The launch began on Thursday and is currently available globally, excluding the EU.
ChatGPT Becomes More Than Just a Chatbot
With this latest update, OpenAI’s ChatGPT no longer just answers questions or generates text. It now acts, carrying out tasks on behalf of users.
According to OpenAI, the AI agent can assess the task at hand, choose the right software, and switch between platforms autonomously. This allows it to complete complex tasks such as curating job applicant lists, planning trips, or conducting market research.
This move follows a growing trend, with tech giants like Google and Anthropic also racing to develop AI agents capable of completing real-world digital tasks.
What the AI Agent Can Do for You
A demonstration earlier this week showcased just how useful the assistant can be. The AI agent scanned a user’s Google calendar, found a suitable time slot between 6 PM and 9 PM on a weekday, then browsed for Italian, Korean, or sushi restaurants with ratings above 4.3 stars. Within 15 minutes, it returned a list of available bookings.
It functions similarly to a human assistant. Users can stop, redirect, or refine instructions mid-task. The assistant may also seek clarification, making it more interactive and efficient.
Built-In Safeguards for Responsible AI Use
Despite the excitement, OpenAI has admitted that giving an AI agent control over browsers and files introduces new risks.
To address this, the company has implemented strict safety features. The AI assistant is trained to ask for user permission before taking any significant or potentially harmful actions. Users can interrupt tasks or take control at any time.
OpenAI has also ensured that the model resists dangerous or suspicious commands, such as requests involving money transfers or data sharing.
In a statement, the company said: “You’re always in control. ChatGPT requests permission before taking actions of consequence, and you can easily interrupt or stop tasks.”
Moreover, OpenAI acknowledged concerns over biological risks. While there’s no direct evidence that he agent could help users create harmful substances, the company is proactively implementing safeguards to prevent any misuse.
No Sponsored Results — For Now
With ChatGPT now capable of shopping on a user's behalf, questions naturally arise around commercialization. Could this lead to subtle advertising or product placement?
While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted that the company might charge a 2% fee on purchases made through its AI tools, OpenAI has clarified that the assistant does not currently include any sponsored recommendations, and there are no immediate plans to introduce them.
Still, analysts believe monetization is likely in the long term. Niamh Burns from Enders Analysis commented: “AI companies are under increasing pressure to earn revenue. Sponsored placements seem inevitable at some point.”
Available for Paid Users Only
The upgraded AI assistant will be accessible only to subscribers of ChatGPT’s “Pro,” “Plus,” and “Teams” plans. The company is rolling out the feature gradually, ensuring safety checks are in place before wider release.
AI Agents Are Here to Assist, But Caution Remains
OpenAI's ChatGPT agent is a bold step forward in personal AI. It blends intelligence with action, offering users a digital assistant that can handle real-world digital tasks with minimal input. While the possibilities are vast, the risks are real, and OpenAI seems committed to balancing innovation with responsibility.
As the competition in AI assistants heats up, one thing is clear: the age of passive chatbots is ending. AI agents are ready to do the work, one task at a time.
