Charging down the field with determination, every yard counts in the Chiefs' pursuit of victory.
The Kansas City Chiefs overcame early mistakes and penalties to secure their first victory of the season, defeating the New York Giants 22-9 on Sunday night. Despite a rocky start, quarterback Patrick Mahomes orchestrated key plays that shifted momentum in Kansas City's favor.
“I kept throwing the ball backwards,” Mahomes admitted. “That's not good.” Yet, he bounced back, making crucial forward passes and even recovering a fumble to maintain possession.
Mahomes’ Heroics and Thornton Connection
Mahomes completed 22 of 37 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, connecting with rookie receiver Tyquan Thornton. His 33-yard on-the-run throw to Thornton midway through the fourth quarter set up Kareem Hunt's one-yard touchdown run, sealing the game.
Coach Andy Reid praised the effort, noting, “It’s a good win to get, especially when you haven’t had one yet.” Linebacker Nick Bolton, who led the team with 14 tackles, stressed the importance of building momentum. “We’ve been searching for one win and trying to figure out how to get this thing going,” Bolton said.
With this win, the Chiefs (1-2) avoided a potential 0-3 start—their first since 2011, two years before Reid’s tenure began. Reid has since led the team to three Super Bowl victories and multiple appearances, including the last three seasons.
Giants Struggle Under Wilson
New York fell to 0-3 as quarterback Russell Wilson struggled, throwing two interceptions and finishing 18 of 32 for 160 yards. Frustrated fans chanted, “We want Dart!” after Wilson’s second interception, prompting a brief appearance by rookie Jaxson Dart, who handled only handoffs. Dart has yet to attempt a pass this season.
Coach Brian Daboll criticized his offense: “When you don’t convert on third down, it’s hard to sustain anything. Nothing was good enough today. I would be booing too.” The Giants converted just once on ten third-down attempts.
Rushing Attack Shines for Both Teams
Unlike previous games where Mahomes led Kansas City in rushing, Isiah Pacheco carried that role against New York, gaining 45 yards on 10 carries. The Giants leaned on rookie Cam Skattebo, who ran for a touchdown for the second consecutive game and totaled 121 yards from scrimmage. Skattebo shared backfield duties with Devin Singletary after Tyrone Tracy left with a shoulder injury early in the first quarter.
Chiefs’ Defense Steps Up
Kansas City’s defense limited Giants wideout Malik Nabers to just two catches for 13 yards. Reid highlighted the effort, saying, “That No. 1 is the real deal. To put the clamps on him, that’s not an easy chore.” The Chiefs previously held Philadelphia stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to minimal yardage.
Injury Updates
The Chiefs faced minor injuries as safety Bryan Cook hurt his neck while defending Nabers but was reported fine. Receiver Xavier Worthy missed a second straight game with a shoulder issue.
The Giants also battled setbacks. Kicker Graham Gano suffered a groin injury and only returned in the fourth quarter to make a 25-yard field goal. Left tackle Andrew Thomas returned after 11 months, playing 26 snaps before rookie Marcus Mbow took over, as planned by Daboll.
Looking Ahead
The Chiefs now aim to build on this win and avoid early-season struggles, while the Giants search for their first victory of the year. Kansas City’s combination of Mahomes’ playmaking and Thornton’s big-play ability could prove decisive as the season progresses.
