The Chinese government declared on Wednesday that a Chinese individual who navigated a small vessel into a crucial river mouth in Taiwan acted independently and would face consequences upon returning to China.
Taiwanese authorities detained the man, suspected to be a former Chinese naval officer named Ruan, prompting concerns that China might be testing Taiwan's defenses.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, dismissed these suspicions, emphasizing it as the individual's personal action. He criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party for politicizing the incident. China considers Taiwan its territory and conducts military activities near the island regularly.
The small boat was spotted near Taiwan's coast and later intercepted as it disrupted ferry traffic across the Tamsui River, leading to speculation about its origin and purpose. Despite improved transport links, China maintains strict travel restrictions for its officials regarding Taiwan.
