Chris Evans is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, alongside Robert Downey Jr., who will portray Doctor Doom. The details of Evans’ role remain unclear, but his involvement has been confirmed, according to The Wrap.
Evans last portrayed Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where his character’s story concluded with him retiring as an elderly man. However, he made a surprising cameo earlier this year in Deadpool and Wolverine, reprising his role as Johnny Storm from Fox’s Fantastic Four films, not as Captain America.
The film will reunite Evans with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously worked with him and Downey Jr. on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The Russo Brothers are set to helm both Avengers: Doomsday, releasing on May 1, 2026, and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
Speculation about Evans' return to the MCU has circulated for years, but Marvel Studios has not commented. His comeback raises questions about how his Steve Rogers character, left as an elderly man in Endgame, will fit into the evolving MCU narrative. Similarly, Downey Jr. is set to return as a Tony Stark variant, despite Stark’s death in Endgame, signaling that creative possibilities remain wide open.
Meanwhile, Anthony Mackie currently carries the mantle of Captain America in the MCU and will appear in Captain America: Brave New World, releasing on February 14, 2025, alongside Harrison Ford.
Evans originally debuted as the super-soldier in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to star in its sequels and four Avengers films. Outside the MCU, Evans has appeared in a range of projects, including the 2019 hit Knives Out, the 2020 Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob, Pixar's Lightyear (2022), and Netflix’s The Gray Man, where he played the antagonist.
Most recently, he starred alongside Emily Blunt in Pain Hustlers (2023) and with Ana de Armas in the action-comedy Ghosted. Fans can now catch him in Amazon MGM's holiday adventure Red One, where he stars opposite Dwayne Johnson.
Evans is repped by CAA, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
