Claudia Black at a red-carpet event, weeks before confirming her exit from Ahsoka Season 2 over pay concerns.
The Star Wars series Ahsoka is gearing up for a new season, but one familiar presence will be missing. Actor Claudia Black, who portrayed the Nightsister Klothow in Season 1, has confirmed she will not return for the upcoming chapter.
A Difficult Choice for a Single Mother
Black revealed that she stepped away from Season 2 due to financial reasons. She explained that the production’s move to London created costs she could not absorb as a single mother based in Los Angeles.
She said the team had picked up her contract for the new season, but the pay offered did not meet the needs of maintaining her responsibilities at home. Disney’s current budgeting structure, she noted, made a workable arrangement impossible.
An Emotional Goodbye
The actor admitted the decision was painful. She shared that she sent a heartfelt email to showrunner Dave Filoni, thanking him for the experience. Black described her time on Ahsoka as a dream for anyone who grew up immersed in the Star Wars universe. She praised the environment, the directors, and the chance to work on The Volume, the cutting-edge virtual production stage.
A Memorable Role in Season 1
Black appeared in the 2023 debut season as one of the Dathmiri Nightsisters of Peridia. Alongside Jeryl Prescott Gallien and Jane Edwina Seymour, she played a witch who wields ancient dark magic and aids Grand Admiral Thrawn. The arc earned praise from fans who enjoyed the eerie mystique the trio brought to the story.
A Special Bond with Her Son
The role held personal meaning for Black. Her younger son was a devoted fan of The Clone Wars, and the Nightsisters were a familiar part of his fandom. She said he recognized her character’s identity from a single hint, even with strict NDAs in place. Working on something he cared about made the project even more special for her.
A Business Decision, Not a Creative One
Black expressed regret that the situation ended this way but acknowledged the broader challenges facing the industry. She said the entertainment business is largely driven by financial realities, especially in a period where studios are cautious with spending. Although disappointed, she emphasized that she understood the market pressures and had to “do the sums and move on.”
Season 2 Moves Ahead Without Her
Lucasfilm did not comment on her exit. However, Dave Filoni recently confirmed that production for Season 2 is on track. Fans will now look ahead to how the story unfolds without one of Season 1’s most intriguing performers.
