Chris Paul rejoined the Clippers in July after a spell with the San Antonio Spurs

The Los Angeles Clippers have officially released Chris Paul, ending the veteran guard’s second stint with the franchise. The decision comes as the Clippers endure one of their worst stretches in years, with 14 losses in their last 16 games.

The move was confirmed just hours before their matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, marking a major turning point for a team desperate to regain momentum. Paul, a 12-time NBA All-Star and one of the most accomplished point guards in league history, was in his 21st and final NBA season.

Chris Paul’s Exit Amid Clippers’ Struggles

Clippers president Lawrence Frank announced the news, emphasizing that Paul was not the scapegoat for the team’s underwhelming performance.

“We are parting ways with Chris, and he will no longer be with the team,” Frank told ESPN. He added that the team’s struggles stemmed from many factors, accepting responsibility for their poor record.

Frank also praised Paul’s long and storied impact on the franchise. “Chris is a legendary Clipper and has had a historic career,” he said. “We’re grateful for the impact he’s made.”

Paul addressed his departure on Instagram with a short message: “Just found out I’m being sent home.”

Tense Relationship Behind the Scenes

Reports suggest deeper issues contributed to Paul’s release. According to ESPN, Paul and head coach Tyronn Lue had not spoken for several weeks, indicating internal tension ahead of the decision.

This strained relationship, combined with the Clippers’ ongoing slump, seems to have accelerated the parting of ways.

A Storied Career Comes Full Circle

Paul first joined the Clippers in 2011, staying until 2017 and helping spark the iconic “Lob City” era with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. He rejoined the franchise last July on a one-year deal, seeking to close out his career with a team he once helped elevate.

Even at age 40, Paul’s legacy remains unmatched in many statistical categories. He ranks second in NBA history in assists (12,552), behind only John Stockton. He also holds the second-most steals (2,728), again trailing Stockton.

Despite his remarkable résumé, Paul remains without an NBA championship. His closest attempt came in 2021 with the Phoenix Suns, when the team reached the NBA Finals but fell to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Clippers’ Current Crisis and What Comes Next

The Clippers’ decision to release Chris Paul raises questions about the direction of the franchise. Losing 14 of 16 games has put the team in a difficult position early in the season, and Paul’s departure signals a broader shift.

Coaching decisions, roster adjustments, and locker-room dynamics may all play a role in how the team moves forward. The Clippers now face the challenge of stabilizing their performance without one of the most experienced players in the league.

For Paul, the release closes another chapter in a career defined by elite playmaking, leadership, and longevity. Whether he chooses to pursue opportunities elsewhere for the remainder of his final season remains unknown.

End of an Era for Chris Paul and the Clippers

The Clippers releasing Chris Paul marks the end of a significant era, both for the franchise and the player. While the team searches for answers to their season-long struggles, Paul moves on with a legacy secured as one of the NBA’s greatest point guards.

His departure underscores the Clippers’ urgency to reset in hopes of salvaging their season, while fans and analysts alike reflect on what Chris Paul has meant to the team—and to the game itself.
